Problems with the Mega-CD...

PROBLEM: When I try to preview some of the picture screen savers (like New York Scenes, Africa Scenes, Paradise, etc.), I get this message: "Can't load custom control DLL: F:\DATA4\DLL\ET12\FXIMG300.VBX". What does this mean?
SOLUTION: Some people are unable to PREVIEW the screen savers from the CD. However, they run fine once installed on your system. Just install them and then run them as you normally select and test a screen saver.

PROBLEM: I'm running NT and I get and error message when I try to run SETUP.EXE - says error in kernel32.... What do I do?
SOLUTION: Try running SETUP16.EXE instead. This is just a different version of the installer interface, but seems to work fine for everyone.

PROBLEM: My password doesn't work. Why?
SOLUTION: WRONG! The passwords do work! Read the instructions, please.. Your password(s) will work only where they are supposed to work. For example, you cannot install the Utility Pack using the ScreenPix password.

PROBLEM: The first screen comes up, but I don't see any button to click to continue. What's up?
SOLUTION: Please read that first screen. The first sentence says "Turn off large fonts if you cannot see this whole screen..". You need to turn off MS Large Fonts option (at least temporarily), instructions on the bottom of the sheet that came with your CD.

How do I submit/add software programs to your site?

You don't, really. Unlike most of the other software sites that list 80,000 files, of which 78,500 are pretty bad, the Galt Shareware Zone lists only the best -- so our visitors don't waste their time downloading garbage. To achieve this goal, we regularly seek out and reviews dozens of programs per month. However, if you feel you have a program that is of general interest, that is of excellent quality (no beta software, no weekly revisions to fix bugs), and that is significantly different from the existing leaders in its product class (no need to submit a 38th graphic viewer or Notepad replacement), you can e-mail us with a description and download link and we will try to review it - no promises, as there are thousands of programs out there that keep us busy.

How do I unzip the files I download? Where do I get ZIP software?

To unzip a file, you first need some unzipping software like 123 ZIP! (which is the best, we make it ourselves). If you don't already have that installed on your system, then visit this page GET 123 ZIP and follow the instructions there for downloading and installing it (it comes as an .EXE file, so you don't have to worry about unzipping it!). You only need to install 123 ZIP! once, and then unzipping is easy.

How do I change my homepage?

Like all programs, Internet Explorer is controlled by the menus you see at the top of the screen. If you take about 30 seconds to explore the different menu options, you will quickly find the one that has a setting for homepage. Anyone can change their homepage anytime they want. Go to the Edit or Tools menu and select Internet Options and type in any homepage you wish - nothing magical about it.

1. How do I get the registered version of Full Motion to play videos full screen, it keeps reverting back to a window size?

Sounds like you have 2 settings in your WIN.INI file. Do the following to fix:

You must run SYSEDIT. You can run SYSEDIT from Program Manager by going to the FILE menu and selecting RUN. Then type "SYSEDIT" and hit return. This will start SYSEDIT. If you are in Win95 you can go to your start button and select RUN from the bottom and do the same.

With SYSEDIT running, go to the WINDOW menu and select the window labeled WIN.INI. This will bring the WIN.INI file to the front of the screen for editing. Go to the Search menu and select FIND, then type in "mciavi" and click the Next button. This will show you something that looks like the following:

[mciavi]
DefaultVideo=Window
Zoom By 2=0
Skip Frames =1

[next heading]

What you need to do is highlight everything starting with the [mciavi] bracketed heading down until just before the next bracketed heading and delete it. DO NOT delete the next bracketed heading.

Then go to the Search menu and search again for "mciavi" and click the Next button. This will bring up the second occurrence, do the same thing, deleting the [mciavi] and the few lines below it. Then go to File| Save to save it and then File| Exit to exit.

Now when you run Full Motion it will put in a single clean [mciavi] section for you and your problem should be solved.

2. Why won't my MOV video files play properly in Full Motion or Video Launch Pad?

MOV files are an Apple QuickTime format, and are notoriously unstable under Windows. If your MOV files won't play under Video Launch Pad or Full Motion, there are 2 possible problems: the file is corrupt or invalid, or QuickTime is not installed properly on your system. You must have QuickTime installed to play MOV files on your Windows PC. Be sure you use ONLY the 16-bit version of Quicktime, because the 32-bit version disables all other applications from playing MOV files, except for the little Apple player that comes with it. If you have the 32-bit version installed and are having problems, de-install it and get the 16-bit version instead. Once you have 16-bit QuickTime installed properly, your MOV file should play fine unless it is corrupted. The ultimate testing situation is to use MS Media Player that comes with Windows. Under Win3.X, it should be in your Utilities Group under Program Manager. Under Win95, go to your START button, select PROGRAMS, then ACCESSORIES, then MULTIMEDIA, then MEDIA PLAYER. If your MOV clips will not play under Media Player, they will not play under our programs either since they are probably corrupted in some way.

Download: 16-bit QT here. Or visit the Apple website at: http://www.apple.com

3. Why am I getting a "Bad File Name" error when I try to run the ScreenPix Screen Saver?

Your system is trying to read in an older, incompatible data file. To fix this problem, go into your \WINDOWS directory (using File Manager or Explorer or My Computer) and delete the files called SCRNPIX.INI and SCRNTHEM.DAT. Then go back into ScreenPix and select your pictures again, and test it. It should now work fine.

4. When I run the Waterfalls Screen Saver, a strange dis-colored box appears around the center of the waterfall, making it look kind of fuzzy. What's wrong?

If the colors on Waterfalls or any other screen saver are not perfectly clear, all you need to do is set your color palette to be more than 256 colors. Under Win95, from the START button go to the SETTINGS item, and select Control Panel. Then choose Display and go to the Settings tab. From Settings, click the drop down menu under Color Palette and pick a color setting that is GREATER than 256 colors, such as 16-bit high color. This will solve all your color problems by giving your system thousands of colors to draw with, instead of only 256. Under Win3.1, you probably have some sort of utility that came with your graphics card that lets you change screen resolution and colors. Again, set your colors to be GREATER than 256, and it will look fine.

5. I can't find the VBRUN300.DLL that is required for screen savers, where is it?

VBRUN300.DLL is the Visual Basic run-time library required to run programs written in the Microsoft Visual Basic programming language. It is about 400KB in size, so most authors do not include it in their ZIP files since most people already have it. You need to have this file in your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Download it from one of the locations below, then unzip it and copy it to your Windows folder, and everything will work fine.

6. I need to install Video for Windows, where can I download it?

Video for Windows (required for running AVI files) is built into Win95, but was not included in Win3.X, so you must download it and install it if you don't have it. Download either of these self-extracting files into a temporary directory, run them and they will expand into about 40 smaller files, then run the INSTALL or SETUP file to actually install VfW. You can then delete all the temporary files.

7. I need help downloading, unzipping, and installing screen savers/programs, how do I do it?

Basically, the process is quite simple. First, you need to "download" the file (move it from the Internet down to your computer). You normally do this by clicking it and choosing SAVE TO DISK, and saving it to your hard drive. If you are getting error messages from MSIE, try right-clicking the filename and selecting SAVE FILE AS from the pop-up menu. Second, you need to "unzip" it if it is a .ZIP file (a .ZIP file is just a compressed group of files combined into a single, small file for easier downloading -- it's like buying your paperclips in a box, instead of getting 400 loose paperclips). Third, you need to install the program onto your system.

After you have downloaded a ZIP file, double-click it and 123 ZIP! will launch and show you the files contained in the ZIP file. Usually there will be a README file, a SETUP.EXE or INSTALL.EXE files, and some other miscellaneous files. Click the UNZIP button and then extract all those files to some other temporary location, and then run the SETUP.EXE or INSTALL.EXE file to actually install the program onto your system. You can then delete the temporary files and .ZIP file.

Once the program is installed on your system, go ahead and run it. If it is a screen saver, you need to go to your Control Panel where you select screen savers, and you will see it added to the list of available screen savers.

8. In the EZ-Viewer thumbnail screen, the images have color problems and look really grainy. How can I fix them?

Make sure that your system colors are set to be GREATER than 256 colors. See question #4 above if you don't know how to do this.

9. Why do I get a "SYSDEF.DAT" error message when I try to run Safekeeper Backup?

It means your default listing of system files is not working right. To fix it, from the main screen just click the "Select System Files" button and click the Restore button in the top left corner. It should now work fine.

10. I'm having troubles installing the Desktop Themes, can you help?

11. I'm using WinNT 4.0 or Win98 and I can't access the setup screen for ScreenPix - I just get an error message saying "No pictures selected". What's wrong?

Unfortunately, our friends at Microsoft changed the screen saver connections under NT 4.0, and you can no longer access the SETTINGS screen for most 16-bit screen savers. A fixed shareware version is here is here. If you are a registered user, you need to get an upgraded Mega-CD for $19. You can email us at: info@galttech.com

12. When I try to launch DeskView, I get this error: "Access violation at address ....Read of address..". What does this mean?

It means you will not be able to use this program. This is caused when you have a device attached to your system that is not recognized by DeskView. The most common devices are: older, non-3.5" floppy disks, multiple-CD changers, and other strange drives. There is no solution for this problem at this time.

13. How can I remove one of your programs or screen savers from my system?

All of our programs install cleanly and are easy to remove. In general, when you want to remove a program from your system, you delete the directory you installed it to (ex: C:\GALTWARE\EZVIEWER) and then delete its icon (in whatever program group you installed it to). To delete the icon that launches a program, under Win95, go to your START button, then select SETTINGS, then TASKBAR. From the taskbar screen, click the START MENU PROGRAMS tab, then click the REMOVE button. You will then see a list of all your program groups -- you can delete an entire group or just the icon for a single program within that group. This is also where you will find your STARTUP folder, where programs launch automatically when you start your PC (like DeskView). Just delete any icon from this STARTUP group and the program will no longer attempt to launch at startup.

For 16-bit screen savers, you need to go to your \WINDOWS directory and delete the screen saver .SCR file (all screen savers are stored in your \WINDOWS directory). This means you double-click My Computer, then double-click your C drive, then double-click the Windows folder and scroll through the list of files looking for the ones you need to delete. For 32-bit screen savers, you need to go to your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and delete the screen saver .SCR file. Most of our files are clearly named and self-contained. For example, to remove Waterfalls you delete the WATERFAL.SCR file. To remove LogoSaver, you delete the LOGOSAVE.SCR file. To delete FishSaver, you delete the FISHSAVE.SCR file. To delete FishTank (32-bit), go to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and delete FISHTANK.APJ and FISHTANK.SCR. That's it!

15. I am trying to use 123 ZIP and I get an error that says something about an outdated file, COMCTL32.DLL. How do I fix this?

It just means you need a newer version of the file to run the program. The file is available at our website for download.

Download it from here and copy it to your \windows\system directory. If you see a bunch of weird characters on the screen and don't get an option to download it, hit the STOP button, then go to FILE, SAVE AS and save it to the above location on your hard drive:
