If you thought that plasma TVs were too expensive, think again. With 42 inch plasmas down well below $500, the 50" plasmas are working their way towards $9000 and lower. The 720p (lower resolution) models are well under $700 and the higher end 1080p HDTV plasma tvs are much closer to $1000 than a year ago. Just a few years ago the highend end models went for $4000. That's an amazing drop in price and with the economic recession that appears here to stay, prices will probably drop even more as the holiday season approaches and we go into 2012. Savvy consumers can pick up huge bargains on plasma screens and you aren't relegated to having to buy the 42 inch models. The new 50" plasma flat panels are great if you have space for them. I bought a Panasonic 50 inch plasma tv 2 years ago that has 720p resolution and I can't say enough about it. Some of our friends went with the Vizio brand which at the time was sold only through Costco and they too are happy with the television performance from the budget brand.
As always, we consult the latest Consumer Reports ratings on plasma tvs and again they show the Panasonic models near the top in 50 inch models and 58 inch models. Some models from LG score lower than the Panasonics but Samsung holds it own in head to head comparisons. Price is definitely a huge deciding factor when consumers are shopping for a big plasma screen. It seems that prices range from $500 to $1200. If you walk into an electronics store to view the picture quality and color these plasma screens display, you may be surprised that the difference between a 720p HD program and one shown in 1080p is not that different. Unless you plan on watching HD Dvds or play lots of video games on your HDTV, consider the lower priced 720p plasma tvs. Also, note that your tv programming from cable providers isn't all in HD at this time and you will be forced to pay an additional monthly fee through providers like Comcast to watch your favorite shows in HD quality. Eventually, all programs will be aired in HD, but for now it's a select few. Sports are the one area that most cable and satellite dish providers are good at making available in HD. Back to the 50 inch plasma screens, while Panasonic gets the best overall reviews from respected sources like Consumer Reports, other more technical reviews done by CNET and tv owners on sites like AVSforum.com go with other models. In terms of brands, the top sellers are Samsung, Vizio, Panasonic, Sharp, and LG. Best Buy carries a large inventory of 50 inch plasmas and is a great place to start your shopping experience. Their pricing is very competitive as well and you can always check online at websites like Amazon.com to see what other stores are selling the particular models for. There is no better time than the present to buy a plasma 50 inch HDTV so check out the latest models and do your research. In terms of long reliability, Panasonic has the best repair history (with fewest repairs needed), followed by brands like Pioneer and Samsung. Phillips plasma tvs were slightly higher than most of the others and Vizio just hasn't been around long enough to know if their budget prices equate to more repairs down the road. For now, Vizio 50 inch plasmas are holding up just fine in customer surveys. See our top picks listed below with information on where to buy, pricing, and brief descriptions. Panasonic 50 Inch Plasma:
RECOMMENDED - The best 50 inch plasma HDTVs are those sold by Panasonic. We took into account price, reliability, HD and DVD picture quality, and audio quality. If you want the 1080p set, go with the Panasonic VIERA S1 Series TC-P50S1 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV - it delivers the brightest whites and the darkest blacks. Owners can't say enough about the picture quality and HD colors on the screen. One of the few complaints we found was from a buyer that didn't realize that they would have to purchase HD programming from their cable company in order to use the 50 inch screen to its fullest advantage. Another Panasonic that gets excellent ratings is the Panasonic VIERA TC-P50G25 which is priced right around $1000 and again gives you 1080p HD quality images and colors. Consumers say it offers some of the best performance you can find for the money and Panasonic has good long term reliability rankings with their plasma screens. If 1080p isn't a requirement, then go with the lesser Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P50X1 ($775) and still get all the great quality you'd expect from a major brand. The 720p resolution will deliver excellent quality and until cable companies broadcast all there channels in HD, the 720p plasma is a "outstanding option" says one owner. Panasonic is constantly improving their plasma screens and some of the 58 inch models are dropping in price as you read this. See their entire selection of Panasonic Plasma TVs online at Amazon.
Top Rated 50 Inch Plasma:
The Samsung PN50C550 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Black) is a high end plasma available with superior ratings compared to other brands. We do say this top rated 50 inch plasma screen with 1080p resolution and intense blacks considers some attention but we also favor the other top selling Samsung models. Owners of the latest Samsung plasmas say the picture is "awesome" and many say it's "simply stunning". RECOMMENDED - We suggest looking at the Samsung PN50B650 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV which is considered a "great value" in the 50 inch plasma category. Samsung has lagged behind the reviews that Panasonic and Pioneer get, but the Samsung PN50B650 plasma is turning heads with great picture quality and colors. Some owners note that the Samsung 50" plasma is not meant for bright rooms since the glare on the screen can be distracting. Only consider the Samsung if you have a darker theater type room to put it into. The Samsung 50-inch is sold in Best Buy stores but better pricing is available online through Amazon.com. You can find all the top rated Samsung 50 and 58 inch plasmas here.
Budget 50 Inch Plasma:
Just a while ago 50 inch plasmas were all well over $2000 for those with 1080p technology, but with the LCD TV market taking more and more sales from plasma models, it appears that prices will continue to drop. Consumers are the winners in this category as many manufacturers are literally losing money while producing plasma and LCD screens for homes. We just read that top selling Samsung had a financial loss in their TV sector for the most recent quarters. It could be due to the recession, but overall the margins are slim and selling TV's isn't what it used to be even a decade ago. Budget priced 50 and 58 inch plasma HDTV's are flooding the market and stores are still selling them at a brisk pace. LG and Panasonic sell some very reasonably priced 720p 50 inch screens that rate well with Consumer Reports magazine and other leading electronics websites. Reviews on Amazon.com point towards happy customers even on the cheapest of the plasma televisions. For less than $800 you can get a low end Samsung (50 inches) and still enjoy near perfect tv viewing. We suggest you check out the budget priced plasmas on Amazon.com here.
