News, Review, and Pictures of the Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 MP3 Speakers System

Altec Lansing has been making computer speakers and sound systems for more than a decade. With the huge popularity of portable MP3 players, namely the Apple iPod, just about everyone has started making portable speaker systems to enjoy the music without using headphones. Altec launched the inMotion family with models like the inMotion iM3 and iMmini, with classic white designs similar to the iPod itself. Logic 3 had the iStation and Bose had the SoundDock and DLO had the iBoom (seems only Bose didn't feel the need for that initial "i"!). (some larger pictures below).

The inMotion iM7 is a larger unit and comes with both AC and battery support (8 "D" batteries, over 10 hours of portable play time). It looks like a white and silver tube, a $250 tube that is. It is about a foot and a half long, 6.25" in diameter. The iPod, when mounted, sits right in the middle of the face of the unit, with silver speakers on either side. At 11 pounds, it is not light, but certainly portable enough to bring on a picnic, out to the skateboard park, or wherever your iPod might take you. Keep in mind this is designed only for iPods, but admittedly that covers about 90% of us MP3 users. There are 4 speakers drivers behind those silver grilles, and a 4" subwoofer buried inside that tube design. which means way deeper bass than you see in most portable MP3 speaker units. It has sort of a tricky cradle mechanism for holding your iPod, resulting in some reported mechanical problems when the unit first began shipping, but has been subsequently fixed. It comes with an infrared remote like the Bose unit - wish all these portables did the same.

Of course for a speaker system, sound quality is important. And the inMotion iM7 does not disappoint. The subwoofer gives a WAY wider range than most other small speakers. The maximum volume is also better than most, though outdoors it is not as impressive. Final word - 8 out of 10. For $250, you get a great design, top of line sound for its class, and portability to take your tunes with you.
