Reviews of the best boomboxes - Sony - JVC - Belkin - Panasonic - Aiwa:

A boombox is a portable stereo system, often small enough to carry in one hand. Boomboxes first originated in the 1980's when CD's were becoming popular and people wanted to play their music outdoors and in areas where stereo systems just wouldn't fit. I remember buying a boombox when I was about 12 years old thinking it was the greatest thing ever. I used to walk around my backyard with the music blasting right from my shoulder. Many used to come with a dual tape deck and CD player in one. Most still offer cassette decks, but the primary use is for compact disc's or radio usage. I've recently seen both Sirius and XM radio services offering boombox reception. We recently walked through Best Buy to see which styles are being carried and tried to find out what brands are selling the best. You can also go online and shop for your favorite boombox brand at Bestbuy.com.

With the advent of the Apple iPod, boomboxes are not as popular as they were 10 years ago, but they are still carried by most electronic stores and are roughly $40-$150. The best selling are the Sony CD/Radio/Cassette Recorder Boomboxes with two way speaker, convertible boombox, water resistant cover, built-in antenna and more. Amazon.com also offers a nice selection of boomboxes like the Coby and jWin models. We also went to Target to see what they has for boomboxes and found some great deals on the Hello Kitty CD Boom Box with AM/FM Stereo Radio - KT2028 ($59.99), SpongeBob SquarePants CD-R/RW Player with AM/FM Stereo ($39.99), Emerson Portable Cd Player/Radio - Pd5202b ($24.99). Although we didn't find them so easily, Aiwa makes some great boomboxes and we recommend them for quality and discount pricing. Their most popular models are the AIWA CSDXD51 CD/Radio/Tape Boombox with Super Bass, Aiwa CSDMP100 CD/Radio/Cassette Boombox Aiwa CSDMP100 CD/Radio/Cassette Boombox - MP3 Playback/ID3 Tag/Remote. RECOMMENDED - We suggest shopping online at Amazon.com since they carry all the leading name brands and often have the lowest prices on the Internet. Ipod Dock Boombox:

Now that everyone and there grandmothers owns an iPod, the latest product is the DLO iBoom Boombox for iPod White ($84.77) from Amazon.com. Now you can take your music anywhere with the iBoom Boombox. It has a 15-watt, four speaker system with built in digital FM radio. The DLO has an auxiliary input jack, built-in handle, and can run on the AC power adaptor. Works great with the iPod Nano, 5G and all iPods via the dock connectors. It even charges the iPod battery when plugged into the AC power plug. After seeing this product in action at the store, I think I will soon be upgrading from my iPod speakers to the new DLO iBoom Boombox for better sound quality and convenience. RECOMMENDED - We think the top rated Sony Boombox with CD Player, AM/FM Radio, and iPod Dock (White) is the best choice. It's compatible with iPods, iPod minis, iPod nanos, and iPod Touch. The unit charges the iPod battery while it's docked.

Waterproof Boombox:

Who doesn't want to have some music out by the pool during the hot summer months? For years we have shyed away from putting electronic radios, like boomboxes, to close to the water because damage might occur if it got wet or was splashed. No more worries as Sony has created a nice water resistant model - the Sony ZS-X1 S2 Sports CD Boombox with FM/AM Radio and ESP CD Shock Protection. It's designed for outdoor fun with high-impact plastic housing that should do a good job in protecting it from getting wet internally. The cost is a little more than the average boombox, the new Sony is about $120. Another option is the Sony ZS-H10CP Heavy-Duty CD Radio Boombox which features a water and dust resistant housing so it's good to take on the job site or in your backyard near a pool. Sony is your best choice for a waterproof player. See all the Sony boomboxes on Amazon.com here.
