REVIEW: New Flip MinoHD Video Camera

For a few years now, if you wanted a basic, small, simple video camera, the best choice was probably Flip Video, made by Pure Digital Technologies. It didn't cost much, it took basic video, it was easy to move videos to your computer and to the internet, and it was easy to use with just a few buttons. It could capture decent video in MPG .avi format at 640x480 pixels. But what if you wanted higher resolution video? High Def, or HD cameras, were considerably more expensive, selling for $500 and above. But that all changed in the early winter of 2008 when they released the new Flip Mino HD -- the new high definition Flip camcorder. This review will take a look at the specs, features, and price of this new model -- can you really capture good HD video with such a small, inexpensive device?

Flip Hi-Def Video Camcorder - Mino HD

So what's new in the Mino HD? The main new feature, as the name implies, is hi-def video, or HD video recording capabilities. Specifically, the MinoHD will record 1280x760 video at 30fps, saving it in MP4 format. As noted above, the prior Flips all recorded at 640x480, so the HD model does capture significantly more detailed video images, and yes, it qualifies as HD video. Like the Flips before it, the HD model has a fixed focus length (1.5m, so super closeups don't really work), so there is no optical zooming in or out. And there is no jack for a microphone, so you get decent but not perfect audio from the built-in mic (but perfect for casual video, no audio defects). The actual video captures are very bright and clear -- when watched on a HD TV they look great, assuming you have a steady hand; they also look great playing back on your computer. One complaint is the tiny LCD screen (1.5") on the back used as a viewfinder when shooting video and as a display screen when playing back captured video. It's bright enough but tiny compared to the screens found on most digital cameras -- does the job, but could be nicer.

As to size, the Mino HD clocks in at 3.94" x 1.97" x 0.63" and weighs just over 3oz. So the form factor is smaller than a deck of cards or a mini-calculator, very small and light, easy to fit into a pocket or purse, and of course easy to lose. On to battery life, which is critical for these small portable devices. The good news is that Pure Digital does a good job here -- the non-replaceable lithium-ion battery runs for just under 2 hours under normal usage, and it can be recharged via USB port on computer or via power cable in just 2-3 hours. The earlier Flip Ultra and Flip Video models offered the option of using AA batteries, which is an option we really like. The fact is, you will sometimes find yourself with a dead battery, and the flexibility of being able to pop-in an AA replacement is very valuable. So you lose that option with the MinoHD -- but still good battery life overall. The camera does react a little slow though, taking 3-4 seconds to power-up and be ready to shoot. Let's talk about memory and storage -- again, critical for these small portable devices. The Flip Mino HD comes with built-in 4GB of flash memory -- this will hold approx. 1 hour of MP4 video, which is really quite good. For most casual users, you rarely need to capture more than an hour of footage before getting back to your PC. However, what is lacking is support for additional memory via an SD memory card slot -- this gets back to the battery issue, where sometimes you simply need a little extra capacity, and the option to be able to pop-in another memory card would be very worthwhile. The Mino HD comes in black as the only standard color, though you can opt for a "designable" custom overlay if you order direct from their site, TheFlip.com (though you pay full retail price).

How much does the Flip Mino HD camcorder cost?

The MinoHD was launched at a price of $229. We always suggest Amazon first since they tend to have among the lowest prices and discounts, with superior shipping and customer support. The MinoHD is here. You can also check out the other Flip Video products or if you are looking for some higher-end HD video cameras, check out this list of best-selling HD camcorders. Overall, we continue to be impressed by the quality of these inexpensive devices that Pure Digital puts out. True, you are not going to shoot a feature film on these things, but for the YouTube and MySpace crowd that wants quick and easy video, and just for your average Joe who wants an inexpensive option when it comes to a video camers, the Flip Mino HD is a solid choice.
