News, Review, and Pictures of the Sony Grand Wega LCD HD TVLet's start with the name - its pronounced Vay-guh. OK, enough of the technical stuff. Sony has been producing top of the line television sets for decades. With the new interest in flat screen LCD and plasma TVs (who doesn't want a TV hanging on their wall like a picture? but wait, where is the cable, power cords? not as simple as it looks..), Sony has made a big push into this field, moving their line of Wega traditional flat CRT TVs into the almost flat panel, rear projection world of LCD.
The Sony Wega is not quite 4 feet tall, so you need a stand to place it on for optimal viewing angles. The entire unit clocks in at 110 lbs, so get some help when taking it out of the box - nothing like the joy of breaking your multi-thousand dollar toy before even plugging it in! Like most modern sets, the Sony comes with component video inputs for 480i or 1080i, plus 3 composite and 3 S-video inputs, including a side one for easy connection to a video camera or other alternate video source, like a Playstation. Upon initial setup, color calibration is excellent, with good deep blacks, and sharp bright images. General consumer feedback is good for these models, and Sony has a reputation for quality electronic products that are built to last. HD programming looks razor sharp, but keep in mind not all digital cable or satellite programming is in HDTV, although that will certainly be the wave of the future. Also keep in mind when you see these TVs at a store, they are almost always connected to HDTV feeds for awesome, crisp images, which you simply will not see when watching conventional broadcast programs or programs watched through your TIVO which compresses the video and degrades the quality. There is also a 70 inch version available, the XBR KDF-70XBR950 which will set you back almost $5K. And a 55 inch KDF-55WF655 goes for just over $2K. The 42 inch KDF-42WE655 is just under $1500.
