As lovely as the sand and ocean are, sitting down on the hard, lumpy sand really is not all that comfortable. Enter the beach chair! Beach chairs are designed to be compact, easy to carry, able to handle the elements, and comfortable. Most beach chairs come in two styles, based on height: the high boy and the low boy. The low boy chairs are the ones slung low to the ground, where your legs stick pretty much straight out in front of you, allowing you to recline a bit more. The high boys are more like a standard chair, where you'll sit with your knees bent. My preference is for the low boy, letting you stretch your feet and legs out into the sand while still providing support for your back and neck.
In the last few years, the collapsable backpack/camping chairs have also become popular, allowing you to fold them up and carry them over your shoulder in a bag. Their stretchy canvas or mesh design makes a comfortable seating platform. You can pick up camping-style beach chairs for about $25 on the low end, up to $80 on the high end. Check out the site BeachChairs.com. They carry a huge array of beach chairs, from fancy wooden models priced at $200 or more down to simple aluminum beach chairs for $30. They also carry lawn chairs, camping chairs, and chaise lounges. The newer zero gravity comfort recliner chairs are popular on decks, but a little too big to carry down to the beach (they have a model for $299). While you're there, check out their beach carts. Beach carts have large wheels that can handle the sand, but they really shine when it comes to carrying all that beach gear - chairs, coolers, toys, etc. Just stack them on a cart and roll away. They offer 2 models that cost between $45-$70. Check out Beachstore.com as well for an additional selection of good beach chairs.
Buying Beach Towels
Beach towels are critical to keep sand away from you, your belongings, and your food. You want great big towels, thick and absorbent. Check out 4TheBeach.com if you are looking for cheap beach towels or other beach supplies. Expect to pay $14-$30 for a good beach towel. Amazon and Lands End also have nice collections of beach towels. We liked the Bed in the Sand Beach Towel for $15. It has an insertable blow-up pillow in one end so you dont have to keep bunching up shirts and sandals trying to make a pillow. Amazon also has a nice collection of themed towels with sports logos, movie and TV characters, and animals - these are great for kids towels. Also popular are the round towels - instead of constantly rearranging and orienting your towel towards the moving sun, just spin your body around in a circle - much easier! And only $19. Also check out the Beach Hugger built for 2, with pillows that have hidden zippered pockets for valuables, and includes 4 pegs to stake down the corners - $40. These sites also carry cheap beach blankets and beach mats as well.
Beach Umbrellas
The sites listed above also sell beach umbrellas. A key component to get is the beach umbrella anchor peg. These are plastic or metal anchors that you screw into the sand, then slip the umbrella pole into it for stability - otherwise you are endlessly battling the wind that wants to tip over or carry away that nice parachute-shaped umbrella (they cost about $15)! You can pick up a basic beach umbrella for about $15, while fancier ones will set you back closer to $50. There are even beach umbrellas with SPF protection and beach chair umbrellas that connect directly to your chair. The better umbrellas offer a venting system (like you see on market umbrellas) that allow the wind to exit out vents near the top. Size of umbrella depends on how much share you are looking for - a chair umbrella is fine if it is just you, but if you have a few kids, you will likely be looking for a 6 foot diameter umbrella or larger.
