Best Washers and Dryers

Washing machines were quickly adopted since they alleviated much of the drudgery associated with cleaning clothes. Nowadays, pretty much everyone has their own washer and dryer, except for those living in apartments who must use the community laundry room, or those who still visit public laundromats. Apart from occasional trips to the dry cleaners, pretty much everything can be washed at home - just throw it in the machine! Washing machines require almost no maintenance - with proper care, they can easily last for 10 years. There has not been a lot of innovation in the washing machine industry, but recently there has been a lot of hype over the newer front loading machines.

Front loading washers - energy efficiency

Most people are used to seeing front load washers in laundromats. Unlike regular top loading machines that rely on an agitator (that paddled spindle in the middle of the machine) to wash the clothing, the front loaders spin and allow gravity to do the work as the clothes tumble and bounce. Advantages of front load washing machines: one of the biggest advantages to the front loader is the fact that the agitator has been removed, giving you an additional 25-35% capacity. This means you can wash bigger loads. Secondly, they also use less water, which saves water and energy required to heat the water. Thirdly, front load washers spin faster and leave clothing dryer, meaning they spend less time in the dryer, again saving energy and money (and time!). And without the agitator, they are also gentler on clothing and quieter. It is estimated that you save 15 gallons of water per load, and you can save $100 a year in energy costs by switching to a front loading washer. RECOMMENDED - You can browse the most popular front loader washer machines online here.

Unfortunately, these clothes washers tend to cost from $400-$1000 more than their normal top loading counterparts. But that is the price you pay. Some of the most popular makers of top loading washing machines are Samsung, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Kenmore, GE, Miele, and Maytag. Models start from around $750 and go as high as $1500 or $2000. This compares to $350-$700 for a normal top loading washing machine. So it is a big decision, and more often that not, people decide more on looks and styling than just price. Here are some current prices to consider: Frigidaire FTF2140ES 27" Front Load Washer w/ 3.5 Cu. Ft. Capacity - $629; Maytag MAV7551AW 27" Atlantis Top-Load Washer w/ 3.2 Cu. Ft. Capacity - $539; Whirlpool Gold GHW9300PW 27" Duet Front-Load Washer w/ 3.8 Cu. Ft. Capacity - $1149. BEST VALUE - When it comes to a clothes washer that rates high for energy efficiency, water efficiency and capacity we say go with the Maytag Performance Series : MHWE300VW 27in Front-Load Washer 4 cu. ft. - White.

Shopping for a washing machine - washing machine reviews

Sears has always been a good place when shopping for home appliances. They carry the leading brands of washer and dryers, and they also handle pickup and delivery, removing old washing machines (you can also sell them pretty easily through the local want ads - there is a thriving business in 2nd hand home appliances, although you will likely only get $50-$100 for used equipment), and installing the new ones. Check out Sears.com for current models and pricing estimates. Another good site is AJMadison.com. They carry all home appliances - washers and dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, etc. Your local big box electronic stores also usually carry a full line of home appliances - Best Buy, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. Get some price quote printouts from online before you go shopping - many stores will match or beat competitors prices, and you should take advantage of this. Check out the Samsung WF448AA[W] - at around $1500 it is the top of the line, #1 rated front loading machine per consumer magazines. We found some excellent washing machine reviews done by Consumer Reports where they rated dozens of front loading and top loading clothes washers based on washing performance, energy efficiency, water efficiency, capacity, gentleness, noise, vibration, cycle time, and of course price. You can find additional reviews online at CNET, Epinions, and Lowes. SUGGESTION - You can view the best selling washing machines here.
