How do I know what constitutes a quality diamond?:
Two diamonds that look alike at first may, in fact, be very different. Two diamonds of equal size can have very unequal values. The differences between them may be subtle indeed. To understand these differences is to understand the 4C's: Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight. It is the different combinations of all these characteristics that determines the quality and value of a diamond. Cut - Many people confuse cut with the shape of a diamond. Diamonds are cut into a number of shapes, depending on the nature of the rough stone. The most popular are round brilliant, marquise, oval, princess, pear, heart and emerald. When cut to good proportions, the diamond is better able to reflect light, creating more scintillation, more sparkle. It is the cut that enables a diamond to make the best use of light. Color - Diamonds are found with a range of colors, from colorless to faint yellow or brown through to the very rare pinks, blues, greens and other colors known as "fancies". The most desirable color for a diamond is no color. It is the colorless diamond that allows white light to pass effortlessly through it and be dispersed and reflected out as a rainbow of colors. Color has a strong influence on the value of a diamond. Generally the more colorless a diamond appears, the greater its aesthetic appeal. D color is the most expensive and Z has the least value. Clarity - To determine a diamond's clarity, it is viewed under 10-power magnification by a trained eye. Most diamonds contain very small natural inclusions. The fewer and smaller the inclusions are, the less likely it is that they will interfere with the passage of light through the diamond and the more beautiful the diamond will sparkle. F1 is flawless and the scale goes down to I3 which is imperfect. Carat Weight - This is the weight of the diamond measured in carats. One carat is divided into 100 "points", so that a diamond of 75 points weighs .75 carats. Carat weight is the easiest of the 4C's to determine. But two diamonds of equal weight can have very unequal value, depending on their cut, color and clarity. Fine quality can be found in diamonds of all shapes and sizes.
Where can I buy Diamond Rings, Engagement Rings, and Diamond Jewelry:
Bluenile is the most well known website that offers certified diamond jewelry. Their site is very good at guiding you through the process of selecting the right diamonds for your engagement ring or wedding rings. You can build your own ring and find a diamond that fits your budget based on the 4C's mentioned above. Being educated on diamonds is half the battle. Weddings can be stressful events and choosing an engagement ring can be a daunting task for any man. Bluenile.com walks you through the process with information and a helping hand. Another great site for engagement rings and diamond wedding bands is Helzberg.com. They specialize in diamonds and can offer the best selection with actual stores in your area.
Diamond Earring, Bracelets, Necklaces and Pendants:
Helzberg Diamonds has a brand name that goes back to 1915. They have an exellent website for finding information and prices on diamond earrings, diamond necklaces, and diamond pendants. You can search by category, product, or price range. Each diamond has a rating and a certification that the stone is authentic. When you walk into a local jewelry store you never know exactly what you are getting and I have seen 20/20 shows on how jewelers scam unsuspecting customers on diamonds (since the untrained eye can't tell the difference between an expensive or cheap diamond). Be careful when shopping in smaller stores and make sure you get a certified paper stating how it was rated and how much it is worth. Another service Helzburg Diamonds offers is that they repair loose diamonds in your ring setting. The last thing you want to do is lose a diamond that's worth $1000's. Get loose diamonds repaired immediately at Helzberg Diamonds.
Where can I get discount diamonds?:
Diamonds are one of the most expensive things you will ever buy and looking for a deal can lead you into trouble. There are many scam artists out there preying on novice jewelry (specifically diamonds) buyers. There are wholesale diamond stores and websites, but we strongly recommend going with a name brand store or online brand that has a good reputation for a quality product at a fair price. We have truly heard horror stories of some nice guy buying a $10000 diamond engagement ring that turns out to be worth 1/10 of that. Don't be fooled and get educated on diamonds first before you even start to look in stores for the perfect engagement ring.
