With all the wide screen plasma tv's and HDTV cable connections, many people are looking to put it all together and have a movie theater type environment in their own living room. Watching movies at home is big business because it's becoming more and more like being at the theater. The sound and picture quality are excellent with surround sound speakers and subwoofers that practically knock down your walls. The real problem is putting these new home theater systems together properly and hiding all the wires and cables so that it doesn't look like an amateur did it. The majority of home theater systems come packaged with everything you need to get started including speakers, a DVD player, AV Receiver, the subwoofer, a remote control and all the wires and cables you need to connect it all together. They call these a "home theater system in a box". Creating the home theater experience ultimately comes down to money and how much you want to spend. The top selling home theater systems are Panasonics SC-HT930 System ($120-$599) which includes DVD player, 5 speakers and subwoofer, the Sony DAV-FX100W System ($669-$900), and the Sony HT-6900DP System ($369-$500) which has a receiver, 6 speakers and dvd player. We highly recommend having someone (an electrician) put all the wires behind walls and out of site for your system. Eventhough you will spend an extra $400 or so, it's worth the investment to get it done right the first time. Remember that your home theater room will determine much of the sound quality and the home theater furniture is key to being able to relax in your custom home theater. The home theater seating should be back far enough from the screen and the home theater speakers should be setup properly to achieve the best acoustics. The ultimate solution to helping people install home theater systems is to make the systems wireless. No wires or cables. There are new wireless home theater systems coming onto the market and they should do well.
What are the best home theater speakers?:
Bose makes some of the best home theater speakers along with JBL, Polk Audio, Infinity, Yamaha and Sony. The ones we liked the best are the Pioneer S-VSL3 Tall 2-Way Front Speaker System with incredible sound performance from something so sleek. They retail for about $175. The Bose 161 Black Pair Surround Speakers are also a great buy for $175. Again, buying the most expensive home theater speakers doesn't necessarily give you the best sound. The room configuration will determine much of that. Much of the home theater equipment will come combined so buying speakers individually may not be necessary. Check with your local home theater store for more suggestions.
Home theater projectors:
The best home theater projectors in reviews that were done came down to a clear winner in each screen size category. Starting with the 16:9 Widescreen (1366X768) was the Sanyo PLV-WF10. The high resolution and brilliant image set this projector apart from all the rest. The PLV-WF10 is great for large scale multimedia entertainment rooms (150" diagonal screens or larger). Probably not meant for home theater use unless you have a large room to accommodate the quality and projection this screen gives. Sells for just under $7000. Other top end home theater projectors are the InFocus ScreenPlay 7205, Panasonic PT-AE700 and the Sony VPL-HS51.
Home Theater Accessories:
To make your home theater room as much like the movie theater experience, you need unique home theater accessories to set the mood. Home theater seating is essential to a quality experience with cinema style seats. Theater signs and wall art that is related to movies is a great decorating touch. Popcorn machines are cheap and movie posters are available for almost all movies ever made. If your room gets good enough, you could even charge admission.
