With all the widescreen plasma and LCD Tv's and HDTV cable connections, many people are looking to put it all together and have a movie theater type environment in their own living room. Watching movies at home is big business because it's becoming more and more like being at the theater. The sound and picture quality are excellent with surround sound speakers and subwoofers that practically knock down your walls. The real problem is putting these new home theater systems together properly and hiding all the wires and cables so that it doesn't look like an amateur did it. The majority of home theater systems come packaged with everything you need to get started including speakers, a DVD player, AV Receiver, the subwoofer, a remote control and all the wires and cables you need to connect it all together. They call these a home theater in a box (HTIB). Creating the home theater experience ultimately comes down to money and how much you want to spend. The top brands include Sony, Onkyo, Samsung, Panasonic, Klipsch, LG, and Yamaha. Expect to spend anywhere from $200 to $1000 as each component can dramatically increase the cost of the system.
Do you need a 7.1 home theater or 5.1 home theater system? The #'s refer to the channels the system offers. For example, a 5.1 theater system usually will come with rear and front speakers, bookshelf size speakers, a subwoofer, and a central channel speaker (5 speakers total for the 5 channels). The cheaper systems have 3.1 or 2.1 channels while the high end Onkyo and Sony home theaters offer 7 channels. The HTIB systems are easier on homeowners since setup and installation is simpler compared to buying components separately. We highly recommend having someone (an electrician) put all the wires behind walls and out of site for your system. Eventhough you will spend an extra $200 or so, it's worth the investment to get it done right the first time. Remember that your home theater room will determine much of the sound quality and the home theater furniture is key to being able to relax in your custom home theater. The home theater seating should be back far enough from the screen and the speakers should be setup properly to achieve the best acoustics. The ultimate solution to helping people install home theater systems is to make the systems wireless. No wires or cables. There are new wireless home theater systems coming onto the market and they should do well given the hassle they eliminate with clutter. Home theater system reviews - We found hundreds online at audio/video websites for enthusiasts. Go to sites like CNET, Audioholics.com, Ecoustics.com, About.com. They have the latest 2009 and 2010 system reviews with ratings on several of the top sellers. Our personal favorite is the recent testing done by Consumer Reports - they based their ratings on sound quality, ease of use, versatility, number of channels, number of speakers, and price. If you are going to buy a surround sound home theater system then audio quality should be at the top of your list for desired features and only Onkyo and Yamaha deliver on that spec. Those that come with a Blu-Ray player provide great HD picture quality, although we found the best systems are those without a DVD player included. We also found that some of the high end manufacturers like Denon and Bose didn't do that well in consumer reviews posted online compared to the less expensive brands. Perhaps the people who buy these systems for $1000's expect a lot and didn't give quality feedback. The mid-ranged theater systems consistently scored better overall. RECOMMENDED - We suggest shopping online at Amazon.com since they carry all the leading brands and often have the most competitive prices you will find on the Internet. Best Home Theater System:
RECOMMENDED - One of the best overall systems is the Onkyo HT-S5200 7.1 that includes a receiver/speaker package and a dock for your iPod. It comes in traditional black or you can go with the new silver color. You get 130 watts per channel, although the unit does not come with a DVD or Blu-Ray player. Sound quality is rated better than most and owners say the versatility on this home theater system is what they like. There are 4 HDMI inputs, 1 output for video, and the dock for iPod fans. Set up gaming consoles, Blu-Ray players, set-top boxes, etc. At $500 it's mid-range when it comes to HTIB, but consumers say it's "got real value" and offers "clean sound quality". The other company that received top ratings from experts and consumers was Yamaha. Both the YHT-391 and YHT-591 were right up there with the Onkyo. Home Theater Systems with Blu-Ray Player:
We realize that not everyone needs a DVD player with their system, but odds are that you are upgrading all aspects of your entertainment center and having a new Blu-Ray player is probably a good idea. The LG LHB977 1000-Watt Blu-ray Disc Home Theater In a Box is an excellent choice at just over $500. Get full HD 1080p resolution, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, and dts-HD. The two tower speakers look great in any room and the LG LHB977 scores well for sounds quality and picture quality. Sony offers their 5 channel Sony BDVE500W which also gets positive feedback on audio/video forums we visited. Owners say the wireless rear speakers (that use the S-AIR technology) make setup easy and installation possible for even the worst DIY homeowner. The BDV-E500W provides surround sound for all your movie needs and video games. Expect to spend a bit more for these types of systems since they come with a DVD player (or Blu-Ray). Basic Home Theater Systems:
There are quite a few of these systems that sell for less than $300 including the Sony HTSS360 and the other packages that often just include speakers without a DVD player or even receiver. Not everyone needs a 7 channel surround system to fill up their family room. I have a few neighbors who went all out and have theater systems that go way beyond the scope of their TV rooms and it's almost annoying to watch movies in their houses because it's too loud. For those of you with TV's in smaller apartments or condos, finding a system that is 3 channels could easily do the trick. You may not even have room for 7 speakers, let alone 5 of them. Check out the budget home theater systems online here. In the past, I have seem some great closeout clearance sales at Best Buy or other electronics retailers right after Christmas. They need to get rid of inventory and clear out floor space.
