Best Laser Pointer Reviews: Red and Green Lasers

Laser pointers are most commonly used during presentations, allowing a speaker to point to areas on the display screen from across the room. Red laser beam pointers are the most common type and use a lower powered light, normally a 650nm wavelength. You can get a common red laser pointer for less than $20 today (see below for online shopping sites for laser pointers). Green laser pointers have recently become more popular and are powered by a more powerful laser (usually a 532nm wavelength), making them much more visible that red lasers. Some green laser pointers are more than 50 times more powerful than the red ones, and can even burn paper and cast a visible beam even in a lighted room. The low-end green laser pointers start at about $50 and can go up to several hundred dollars for a more high powered one.

Green laser pointers are so powerful they are most commonly used for stargazing, allowing someone to point a visible beam of light in the direction of specific stars, rather than trying to use a finger to point out a specific star. Lasers are very focused beams of light and should never be pointed at people's eyes, as they can cause permanent injury.

Buying a Laser Pointer Online - Green Laser Pointers

AppliedLaser.com offers both red and green laser pointers. The Infiniter 1000 Green Laser runs $169 and features a 532nm green laser with a range of over 1000 yards. Powered by 2 AAA batteries, this is a class IIIa laser with less than 5mw of power. Their basic green laser model runs $89. Both are about the size of a pen. Their red laser pointers range from $40-$70. They also sell laser sights for guns. OnPoint Lasers also sells both the red and green laser pointers. Their green pointer costs $99 and has a 10,000 foot range, also 532nm and powered by 2 AAA batteries. Their red laser pointers go for $39 for one, but they also have wholesale prices for customers buying more than 25. Website. Even Discovery channel's Discovery.com offers laser pointers, from the familiar keychain bullet-shaped red lasers, to $99 green beam laser pointer pens. Instapark.com offer a lot of inexpensive key chain models, costing only $4-$10. Parents might be tempted to give these low-powered units for children to use, but again, lasers are not toys and should not be used without adult supervision.

Finally, check out Z-Bolt.com. They offer a lot of lower-cost laser pens, starting at just $8 or $10. Their green laser pointers are all powered by Sony diodes and have glass lenses, allowing some to reach up to 25,000 feet (almost five miles!).

Anyone who has played with these laser pointers know they can be fun - from watching a cat chase a dot around the floor to making red lights dance on the ceiling at a rock concert, people use them for more than just presentations. However, people have gotten themselves into trouble using these green lasers. People have been arrested for pointing them at planes, at people at sporting events, and at or around law enforcement officers. So use them wisely - laser pointers ARE NOT toys and should not be used in away to cause damage to people or property.
