When it comes to sunglasses, the name (and logo!) Oakley stands apart. But Oakley makes more than just great sunglasses - you can also find Oakley shoes and sandals, ski goggles, watches, backpacks, and more. Oakley first started making sunglasses in the early 80's, becoming popular in the world of cycling and other sports like volleyball. Today, Oakley sunglasses give you a designer look whether you are participating in active sports and looking for the best fitting, best glare-reducing glasses on the market, or whether you are just cruising around in your convertible. And we are talking some high-tech glasses here - these folks have more than 500 patents -- for glasses!! In this guide we will take a look at the various Oakley models, designs, and styles, with information on pricing and where to buy.
Oakley Glass Types
Oakley gives you a huge selection of lens types and colors, from polarized black iridium to bronze polarized to VR50 Emerald iridium to ruby clear. You can check out a light trasmission chart on their website that shows you how much light each lens type allows through from just 9% for the black iridium polarized, meant for extremely bright light conditions, to 93% for the "clear" lens meant for indoor or low-light use. All kinds of tint are available from grey to black to yellow to blue to purple to green and orange. Polarized lenses are best for high-glare condition, like around snow and water and sand. Unlike other polarized glasses that feature a plasticky layer over glass, Oakley builds the polarization right into the lens at the molecular level during the manufacturing process -- it can't be scraped off or damaged.
Oakley Product Lines
Oakley breaks their glasses out into a number of product lines. Their main line is the Sport Performance glasses, which covers the Radar, Flak Jacket, M Frame, Thump Pro, Half Jacket, Water Jacket, and Zero. This line began with the Eyeshade and Blade models from the 1980s, followed by the Mumbo and M Frames in 1990. The Zero is a very cool looking monolithic Plutonite lens design, with 100% UV filtering. Made from the legendary "O Matter", these babies are light and will cling to your head - perfect for volleyball spikes! Cost is about $120. We also like the famous Flak Jacket model with hydrophobic lens coverings that keep oil and water from obscuring your vision, and a perfect 3 point fit with adjustable nose pads -- about $140. The M Frames will also set you back about $120-$140. Oakley's Active Lifestyle line includes the Bottlecap, Dartboard, Gascan, Minute, Canteen, Oil Drum, and Fives. The Bottlecap has a nice open-edge design with no frame on the bottom of the lens. The Plutonite lens material blocks out 100% of UV light, and offers ANSI impact protection. For about $105, this is a good looking pair of all-purpose sunglasses. For $125, the Oil Drum gives you a slightly more "mod" look, with thick, heavy-looking frames. The Oil Drum is also part of the Square O family, named for its square (really more rectangular) lens design -- other Square O models include the Canteen, Gascan, Montefrio, Eyepatch, and Twitch, which all run about $90. If you're going for a thinner, more "Matrix" style, try the A Wire models ($145) or the Square Wire ($160) -- these wire designs have much slimmer frames and a thinner overall design if that's what you are into. You can check out all these and more at the official Oakley website, Oakley.com, where you can also order all of these models directly.
You can also get prescription lenses in your Oakleys, or the nice Transition lens option that changes tint levels automatically as more from indoors to outdoors. You can get a pair of Transition Half Jackets for $180, or Whisker wire frame Transitions for $210. Oakley also makes some cool accessories, like the Bluetooth module you can add to RAZRWIRE or Square Wire frames, for $59. It attaches to either side of the frames and interfaces wirelessly with your Bluetooth compatible cell phone to make and answer call hands-free. Another popular item is the Thump line of glasses, with a built in mini MP3 player. The Thump Pro 512MB version is $299 and lets you listen to music without cords or cables getting in the way. You can get as much as 1GB of music storage, which holds about 250 songs.
