Online Book Stores: Buying Used Books on the InternetOne of the earliest, most famous websites was Amazon.com, an early entry into the world of online book retailing. Unlike a normal retail book store that might carry a few thousand titles, Amazon built a network of shipping warehouses with tens of thousands of in-stock book titles, and access to virtually any book in print and many out of print books through special orders. Amazon has grown since then, adding a huge product line ranging from toys to pet supplies to jewelry, and of course, still books. Their selection is immense, they offer many free shipping deals, and they have an extensive system of user reviews, feedback, and recommendation, along with the ability to preview many books by "looking inside" and seeing the first few pages, table of contents, cover, etc. before buying a book. All in all, Amazon offers a very good online environment for buying books.
Powells BooksIf you are a book lover and find yourself in Portland, OR, you must stop by Powells. Powells City of Books (est. 1971) takes up an entire city block, and is several floors tall. Could be the biggest book store in the world. Anyways, they have always been serious about books. Their website is no different, as this book seller has been online for many years now. They offer a lot of used books and textbooks, but their website also features daily book reviews, special signed editions, and a special bookcast that is recorded on site at their store, featuring author interviews and readings. Their recommendations are not always as accurate as Amazon's, but their staff reviews are excellent and they can usually find any book you need. Orders over $50 are shipped free of charge.Borders BooksBorders of course has a large retail presence, selling books at and around malls all over the USA. Their website gives you searchable access to all the titles they carry, as well as many special order out of print titles. Just like at their stores, you can also order music and videos online. They have a handy store locator as well if you would rather pick up your books at the store, but of course part of the convenience of online shopping for books is that they appear on your doorstep a few days later without you wasting time driving to the store, parking, buying gas, etc. The Borders website also feature monthly recommendations in: Business, Home and Garden, New Releases, Kids, Mystery, Travel, Non-Fiction, and other categories.
