Reviews of the best Sewing Machines:

Sewing machines have not changed much in the last decade or so, but there are still enough differences between models that you need to research and eventually use a sewing machine before buying one. There are many brand names like Singer, Brother, Bernina, Viking, Janome, Pfaff, Kenmore, Husqvarna, Elna, Necchi, and Juki. The best electronic sewing machine was the Janome Decor Excel 5124 ($360). Professional seamstresses prefer electronic machines to mechanical sewing machines so that changing stitches or adjusting stitch length and width involves pressing a button and not turning a less precise lever. Janome delivers with stable and quiet sewing machine that gives you 24 stitches (including a button hole). The one year warranty is much better than others who only give you 90 days. Sears Kenmore 15218 ($170) is the best mechanical sewing machine on the market with knobs and levers adjusting stitches. These mechanical sewing machines are ideal for someone who only needs the machine for minor repairs or occasional projects.

A more avid sewer or seamstress should stick with the electronic sewing machines. If you want a basic computerized sewing machine then try the Brother NX-400 ($700). Computerized sewing machines use a series of small motors controlled by a microprocessor which makes them almost maintenance free and their memory chips hold lots of customized stitches. This model outperformed similar models from Singer, and Viking. The NX-400 has 2 alphabet fonts and over 50 other stitches. A more advanced computerized sewing machine is the Pfaff Performance 2056 ($2000) and now you are getting fairly pricey. Pfaff machines are popular amongst quilters for their built-in walking foot which feeds layers of fabric evenly through the machine. The Pfaff sewing machine has 200+ computerized stitches and 4 adjustable alphabets for monograms.

The Brother LB6770PRW Project Runway Sewing-and-Embroidery Machine is the best embroidery sewing machine out today and costs about $500. The Brother is a combination embroidery and sewing machine that offers 70 built in embroidery designs, 5 monogramming fonts, and 120 frame pattern combinations. If you are looking to buy a sewing machine online, we recommend starting at Amazon.com (great prices, shipping, and service) -- their list of best-selling sewing machines is here.

Computerized Sewing Machine:

RECOMMENDED - We suggest the top selling Brother CS6000I 60-Stitch Computerized Free-Arm Sewing Machine with 7 styles of 1 step auto-sizing buttonholes, a 1 touch start/stop and reverse functions, and a 25 year limited warranty. Snap-on presser feet and the capability to work on larger projects likes quilts. The CS6000i, say owners, is easy to thread since the needle threader is automatic. Accessories that come with machine allow you to do zipper insertion, darning, and twin needle stitching. The portable sewing machine is lightweight and includes a hard cover so you can protect it. Project Runway has become a very popular show on TV and now sewing and clothing design is gaining in popularity. These mid-priced sewing machines are allowing novice sewers to get invaluable experience at home.

Industrial Sewing Machines:

The makers of industrial sewing machines are Singer, Pfaff, Juki, Consew, Brother, Bernina, Union Special, Kansai Special, and Toyota. Prices range from $650 to $2000. Antique sewing machine:

Antique collection is a popular past time for many, but I had never heard of antique sewing machines being such hot demand until I did some research online. There is a wonderful site called Antique Sewing Machines which buys and sells pre-1870 patented antique sewing machines. What looks like an old hunk of metal could be worth $1000's to the right person. Another site that supplies information on antique sewing machines is called Dincum. Get information on toy sewing machines and as well as classic antique machines.
