TV Stand Reviews and Buying Guide:

Less than a decade ago, the standard TV stand was the armoire -- a huge wooden piece of furniture with drawers and shelves to hold your TV accessories, a pivoting stand to hold your TV, and nice doors to close up and hide everything when not in use. That worked OK for 26 and 30 inch TVs, but with newer, larger, and better looking plasma screens, LCDs, and flat panel TVs, the current trend is for open TV stands and wall mounts to display these thinner, sleeker HD television screens. Wall mounting looks great on paper and in display catalogs, but you still need to have a place for your DVD players, cable box, video game consoles, DVDs, etc. (not to mention the hassle of drilling holes in your walls, routing cables and electrical supplies, etc.) So for most of us, a good looking, floor-standing TV stand is what we are after. In this guide we'll take a look at the best TV stands out there -- what you should consider before buying, how much they cost, and more.

Best TV Stands for Plasma and LCD TVs

The first thing to consider when buying a TV stand is the type and size of your TV. If it is a flat panel, you have options for having it stand on a shelf or be mounted on an arm that is part of the stand. If you are planning for a gargantuan 50"+ TV, you'll want to make sure your stand is large enough to handle the size and weight of the TV. The next critical item is shelving. How much room do you need to store everything else that goes with the TV (DVD players, cable boxes, the Wii..) - most shelves are large enough to cover standard size component electronics, but measure to be sure. Also, do you want open shelves to show everything or closed cabinet doors? Some stands offer both, and of course you'll need devices that use wireless remotes to be open in line of sight anyways. You may want to browse your local electronic store to compare designs and styles to see what you like best, but you can buy many of the most popular models online and have shipped them shipped to you (assembly is required, but usually is not too bad for TV stands). If you are ready to buy online, we recommend Amazon.com. We are always impressed by their competitive prices, selection, fast shipping, and customer service -- plus almost everyone already shops with them and trusts them. You can browse their up-to-date list of best-selling TV stands here.

One great looking (though a bit pricey) TV stand for flat panel TVs is the SANUS SYSTEM Flat Panel TV Stand Platinum (seen in picture above, right). It can hold TVs up to 130 lbs (30"-50" screens) with a VESA compatible mounting bracket -- once in place, you can tilt the screen up or down slightly (12 degrees). It has a sturdy base and 2 adjustable glass shelves that can each hold up to 50 pounds (so that's really 3 levels for storing things). We really like the look of the suspended TV, without being so high up (like on a wall) where you have to crane your neck to look at it.
RECOMMENDED: Bush Furniture is another big name in the TV stand market, and their products consistently win good reviews from consumers -- you can see them at Best Buy among other locations. They make a lot of shapes, sizes, and colors, so we suggest you browse Amazon's selection of Bush TV stands here. For larger DLP TVs, the Samsung TR-500X3BX Adjustable 50-, 56- and 61-Inch DLP TV Stand is a good choice, though some complain about its sturdiness with larger TVs.

Sony TV Stands:

Sony has been making tv sets for years and is still a leader in the television market with LCD and Plasma screens that make watching DVD's an amazing experience. Sony also creates Sony TV stands to complement their latest LCD and Plasma TVs. The top sellers are the Sony - TV Stand for 55" and 60" Grand WEGA TVs ($449.99), Sony - TV Stand for Sony KDFE42A10 TVs - Silver ($39.99), Sony - TV Stand for Sony KDFE50A10 TVs - Silver ($49.99), Sony - TV Stand for Grand WEGA KDF-46E2000 TVs - Silver ($269.99), Sony - TV Stand for Select Grand WEGA 50" and 55" TVs - Silver ($314.99). If you haven't bought a television in a while, these stands may seem expensive (the same price as the tv itself), but the newest plasma and flat panel tv's are $1000's. Even though some reports show that LCD and flat panel tv's are coming down in price, don't expect the stands they sit on to get any cheaper.

Swivel TV Stands - Sauder TV Stands:

If you happen to have a room where placement of the tv will leave some people with a bad view, then we suggest a swivel tv stand where you can actually rearrange the angle at which the tv will face. The top swivel tv stand is the Bush - Swivel TV Stand for 36" TVs - Rosewood Maple/Black ($139.99) with a concealed center storage. Sauder tv stands are solid, oak finish on wood products that are reasonable priced at just a little over $100. The top Sauder tv stands are the Sauder - TV/VCR Stand with Swivel Top for 32" TVs ($123.29), Sauder - TV Stand for TVs Up to 36" and Some 40" TVs - Soft Black ($125.99) with swivel top, and the Sauder - TV Stand for Most 32" TVs and Some 36" TVs - American Cherry ($134.99). Sauder is notorious for needing assembly which requires some time, although we found a few stores that will do the assembly for you.
