Moped and Scooter Reviews:

Mopeds and Scooters may become very popular in the coming years with gas prices rising and oil supplies decreasing around the world. Why not own a small gas powered moped/scooter for those around town trips or short commutes? The 49cc mopeds are ideal with 80-90 miles per gallon in fuel economy and they go almost 40 MPH. The nicer scooters are about $1200-$1500, but you can find cheaper mopeds for $600. Scootercompany.com carries some nice 50cc gas scooter mopeds that are similar to those that I rode in the 1970's. Their H50 Model Four Stroke ($875) has a Jialing/Honda Motor, 49cc displacement, has 2 passenger capacity, electronic ignition, and a 4 speed manual transmission. Gas Scooters are fun to ride and I remember my Jogg Scooter from the 1980's as being a blast. Now you can get the QTSS Super Sport for $925 (49cc - 45 MPH, 90 mpg, front glove box) or the Euro Raider Scooter for $795, goes slower at only 35 mph but looks great. We have some more reviews below on Honda, Yamaha, and Kinetic.

Honda Mopeds having always been our favorite with large and small alike. Their 49cc Ruckus ($1999) is a bare bones looking scooter with the frame exposed all over. The Metropolitan II ($1849) offers cool colors, 49cc while the Metropolitan for the same price offers similar features and stylish graphics. The Honda Elite scooter has been around since I was teenage in the 1980's and is still very popular. The Elite 80 sells for $2349 and has an 80cc 4 stroke engine and an automatic transmission. The comfortable seat is great for 2 and it handles great in traffic. The Helix is both larger (249cc) and more expensive at $5349. The 2007 Honda Helix is liquid cooled and goes much faster than the Elite 80. The Helix is a great all-weather commute scooter. The Honda Reflex ($5499) series - Reflex ABS - Reflex Sport - Reflex Sport ABS - are fun to drive with automatic transmissions, comfortable 2 person seating, and smooth acceleration. Tomos mopeds are hot sellers as well these days with the Tomos Streetmate ($1849), Tomos Arrow ($1499) - 100+ miles per gallon and a 2-speed auto transmission, Tomos Revival TS for $1799 with electric start and air cooled, Tomos ST ($1299) and Tomos Spring ($1099). You can find more info online at Heeters.com/mopeds.shtml. The 2007 Yamaha Scooters include the Morpheus ($5199) - 249cc, 4-stroke 4 valve, The Majesty ($5799) is quite large and would be great for longer commutes, has 395cc for additional power, and a huge storage facility below the seat. The Yamaha Vino 125 is a cute European model that sells for $2459 and offers 124cc engine, mikuni carburetor, centrifugal clutch, and an electronic fuel gauge. The new C3 is fuel injected and fun to ride. The 49cc engine is economical on gas and has enough power for small hills. The Yamaha Zuma has been around the longest ($1849) and has a futuristic look with the headlights sticking out like 2 eyeballs from the front. The 2007 Vino Classic is our favorite at just under $2000 with electric start (kickstart option), retro style design, storage compartment, and drum brakes. You can check out all Yamaha mopeds/scooters online at Yamaha-motor.com

Vespa vs Puch:

Vespa mopeds come from Europe and have a classic styling and unique look. The latest models include the Granturismo, GTS, LX, PX 150, and Piaggio models like the X9 500, BV200, BV 500, Fly 150, Typhoon 50, and Typhoon SE (Special Edition). The Fly 150 from Piaggio is $3399 and goes over 60 mph and the tubeless tires give you added stability and control. The Typhoon at 50cc is a great way to get around town for school, work, fun. The X9 Evolution 500 goes almost 100 mph and is a great commute scooter that sells for $6299. Back to the Vespa scooters, we really enjoyed the test drive on a Vespa GTS 250 ($5799) - 244cc, 76 mph, Helical spring with adjustable four-position pre-load and two dual effect hydraulic shock absorbers. You can view the entire line of Vespa mopeds/scooters at Vespausa.com. Puch Mopeds have been around for decades but we couldn't find an actual website for their current mopeds (if they are still in production). If someone knows of a Puch dealer in the USA, please let us know as we have always recommended buying their used models. Another great source for gas scooters and mopeds online is at Bnscooters.com. Their 2007 line includes the Touring Jamaica, Touring Catalina, Touring Bali, Urban Racer 150, Urban Sporty DE, Urban Sporty 150, Urban Sporty 50, Urban Econo 50, and the Urban Retro 150.

Used Moped:

Used mopeds are pretty easy to find in your local area, but for starters try some online websites that specialize in selling used scooters or offer moped classifieds. Start with Moped2.org/mclass.htm or Mopedarmy.com/resources/links/8/. Moped Army is a great resource site for all things moped/scooters. Their moped shop listings (the link above) will help you find used scooters in your neck of the woods. For cheap mopeds and scooters, we recommend Scootercompany.com/50cc_scooters.htm. They carry an MFQT6 for $849 and a Zeon 250cc CF Model for $4295. The Kinetic TFR-USA Moped is $899 and gets up to 150 MPG.

Moped Parts:

Now althought we think mopeds and scooters will run forever (many do), some need repair help periodically and replacing parts is quite easy on the simple engines. We found Stevesmoped.com online and they carry all sorts of moped and scooter parts like spark plugs, kick stands, tires, air filters, gaskets, carburetor parts, piston rings, fuel valves, brake shoes, and exhaust pipes. Since many scooters have been around for years, a good place to find older parts is on Ebay. Just go to Ebay.com and do a search for "moped parts" or "scooter parts" to see what they offer. You'd be amazed at how many people own these economical motored vehicles.
