Motorcycle Insurance Rates:

When I was about 18 I bought my first motorcycle and had to pay my insurance as my parents wanted me to have some responsibility with the purchase. Since I was young and the motorcycle was a sportbike my insurance rates were fairly high. As I have gotten older and changed my motorcycle from a high powered street bike to a cruiser my rates have dropped substantially. My driving history is also very good which lowers the quotes I regularly get so now I only pay about $30/month to have my motorcycle insured. Riding a motorcycle can be dangerous since many drivers on the road simply don't always seen you. Blind spots cause thousands of accidents every year and motorcycles are often a part of that statistic. I had only been riding my motorcycle for about 2 years when I was hit by a car while driving down the freeway. I was lucky to escape with minimal injuries and I am way more cautious now than I was back then. Insurance companies know that young drivers are often careless and those on motorcycles tend to be "thrill seekers" and pay the price when it comes to insurance premiums.

Where is the best place to get the best motorcycle insurance rates? Back when I first got insured for a motorcycle I had to get it through my local agent. Now, with the Internet, you can literally log onto a few websites and get dozens of quotes within 30 minutes or so. We go into that in more detail down below. Ideally, you currently have a car insurance policy and they can just add your motorcycle to that coverage. Your driving record and age will be the 2 biggest factors in determining your motorcycle insurance rates. The older you are and the more experience you have driving on the roadways with no accidents or speeding tickets the lower your premiums will end up. The ugly truth about motorcycles is that they are very fast (even the Harley Davidsons) and young males tend to be the majority of owners out there. Therefore, no matter how you look at it, the cost to insure a motorcycle is not cheap. Add a few speeding tickets or an accident on your driving record and your rates will skyrocket. The only good news is that gas to run a motorcycle is minimal and you can save on that expense. I say check with your current auto insurance company to see what they offer for motorcycles. Not every car insurance company offers cycle insurance so you may have to go outside your current policy to acquire it.

Cost to Insure a Motorcycle:

We researched several online websites that give quotes for motorcycle insurance coverage and the average rate we came up with for a 35 male to drive a sport bike that is roughly 3 years old would cost $85/month. Rates vary depending on several factors - type of motorcycle you ride, driving history, your age, the state you live in, type of coverage you want, have you taken a safety or training course, will the motorcycle be driven only on weekends, deductible, etc. I have heard of some guys paying $200+ a month just to ride a motorcycle and have it insured properly. That seems crazy to pay that kind of premium, but some people just want that thrill. The best way to lower your premiums is to raise the deductible, take a training class (usually offered on a weekend for a few hours), get an anti-theft device for it, and keep your driving record immaculate. Most insurance experts say not to over-insure your motorcycle. Also, if you don't need the latest sport bike, consider a cruiser bike for those weekend rides. When I eventually switched from my Honda Interceptor down to a Honda Nighthawk my rates dropped a lot. Same thing happened for my brother when he finally sold his Ninja and bought something with less power. Get multiple quotes from different insurance companies and the average motorcycle insurance cost should be $120 to $140 if you are in your mid 20's.

Online Insurance Quotes for Motorcycles:

Ok, you want to get some online quotes for motorcycle insurance without too much hassle. We say start with Progessive Motorcycle Insurance - they handle touring, high performance, street sport, cruiser, motocross, dirt bikes, dual purpose, and ATV's. Another excellent source is the Geico Motorcycle Policy Page with details on getting an online quote. What I like about their site are the customer postings with real feedback on policies, customer service issues, etc. The best part of researching motorcycle insurance rates online is that you can quickly change variables like collision, comprehensive, personal injury protection, uninsured motorist bodily injury, property damage liability, and bodily injury liability within seconds and see how that effects your monthly or yearly premiums. AllState, State Farm, and Nationwide also offer coverage for motorcycles so see their websites for details. Most of the online forms require some driving history feedback from you, your address, name, Social Security # (not always required), and other details that they use to give you an estimate on price.
