Carburetor Reviews and Buying Guide:

How does a carburetor work you might ask? A carburetor is a key component in making any gas powered engine run smoothly. It has to mix just the right amount of gasoline with air so that the motor will run efficiently. When too much fuel is mixed with the air, your engine "runs rich" which means it may not run at all (it floods), runs poorly, wastes fuel, or runs very smoky. On the other hand, if too little fuel is mixed with the air, your motor will "run lean" which could potentially damage the engine. Most new cars use fuel injection for better gas mileage and lower emissions. Older cars and smaller household equipment like lawm mowers and chain saws use carburetors because they are simple and cheap. For an excellent carburetor resource online go to Carbsonly.com. They carry all the major brands like Holley, Carter, Rochester, Autolite, Motorcraft, Edelbrock, Mikuni, Aisan, Keihin, Honda, Nikki, Hitachi, Weber, Solex, Stromberg, SU, Zenith, and Dellorto. They have carburetors for cars, pickup trucks, vans, jeeps, RV's, SUV's, and motor homes. Get Domestic, Asian, and European models and they offer carburetors for specific needs like towing, offroad, high altitude, street performance, racing, stock daily drivers, muscle cars, hot rods, sports cars, and classics. The most popular items are the new Weber carburetors and conversion kits, Holley Street Avengers, Holley Truck Avengers, Holley lowrider avenger, Holley Universal Performance Carburetors, Holley Stock replacement carburetors, Zenith Carburetors, and the Carter AFB performance carbs.

Nationalcarburetors has been in business since 1954 supplying only the best carburetors and fuel injectors. They have new and rebuilt carburetors with a 1989 Honda Accord carburetor going for about $240 (not installed). From their online inventory, we found that most carburetors sell for about $150-$280 and are completely remanufactured with all new parts and come in a chrome like polished finish. One of their sister sites is at Seadoocarburetors.com and there you can find Jetski and Seadoo carburetors for most brands and models. Some of the Holley performance carburetors sell for $340+ and the Edelbrock collection of carburetors are offered as new, remanufactured and rebuilt. Most are calibrated for maximum fuel economy and performance. Classic cars are where you will see the majority of rebuilt carburetors being bought. Nowadays the muscle cars from the 1960's and 1970's are popular as fixer upper projects where people buy the cars and slowly redo the engines, body, and interiors to almost original condition. When you decide to have your carburetor rebuilt or redone, do some troubleshooting first to make sure that is what you need done to begin with. You can use the helpful guide online at Recarbco.com/technical/newtrouble.html and get information on cold starting problems, warm starting problems, cold engine drivability problems, warm engine drivability problems, poor performance or gas mileage, flooding, and hesitation during acceleration. The most common problem associated with a carburetor is a bad air setting which can be adjusted accordingly.

Carburetor Repair Kits - Rebuilt Carburetors:

If you happen to be a handyman when it comes to motors and engines, then rebuilding a carburetor may sound like a fun project. Too me, it sounds more painful than a root canal. I have absolutely no confidence or ability when it comes to engine and mechanical things, so when I needed a rebuilt carburetor for my older Honda Accord, it was off to the shop for the work to be done. You can order parts online and hopefully save a little at a site like Thecarburetorshop.com. They carry a whole line of carburetor repair kits with listings of 82,000 carburetors and 3,000 rebuilding kits. They currently produce kits for the following carburetors: Autolite, Cadillac, Carter, Chandler Groves, Detroit Lubricator, Ensign, Essex, Holley, Hudson, Kingston, Marvel, Marvel Schebler, Penberthy, Rayfield, Rochester, Schebler, Simmons, Stewart, Stromberg, Zenith. The kits are offered in vehicle categories like "passenger", "truck", "tractor", "industrial", and "marine". I have to say just looking through their online database was amazing (they have kits kits going back to 1903 engines).

Motorcyle Carburetors

The best source for motorcycle carburetors online is at Motorcyclecarbs.com with a wide selection of carburetor accessories, carburetor kits, and carburetor jets. At the time of this writing the site was online but at publishing time the site as offline and so we suggest going to BikeBandit.com if you are having problems getting on to the site. Bike Bandit carries lots of afermarket performance parts for all types of motorcycles and includes manuals, tools, and videos. Keeping a motorcycle carburetor tuned to perfection is hard work and most motorcycle enthusiasts want their bikes in tip top shape all the time. There is a widely used and popular product called Carbtune II which synchronizes the carbs on Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, BMW, Ducati, Guzzi, Laverda, Triumph and Honda motorcycles and virtually any other multi-carburetted engine. You can find more details online at Carbtune.com. Carbtune also works with fuel injection throttle bodies and accurately syncs 4-stroke outboards, snowmobiles, microlight aircraft and sports cars. Also works on some 2-stroke engines like Suzuki triples. Cost in US $ is about $100.

Lawn Mower Carburetors - Tecumseh Carburetors:

Lawn mowers are all run on carburetor technology and the most popular lawn mower carburetors are from Briggs & Stratton, Tecumseh, Honda, MTD, Walbro, Zama, and Kawasaki. Jackssmallengines.com carries a huge inventory of 2-cycle carburetors & parts and 4-cycle carburetors and parts. The 2-cycle carb kits for Nikki are $15, replacement carburetor parts for Tillotson are about $2/each, Walbro carburetor parts run $10-$15, complete replacement carburetors for Walbro are $40-$60. Zama carburetor parts go from $50-$80, Briggs and Stratton rebuild carburetor kits are about $20, Tecumseh replacement carburetor parts are available for Carburetor float ($4), carburetor bowl ($2.50), and most of the Tecumseh carburetor rebuild kits parts are under $10. The really issue lies in who will actually do the work to rebuild a bad carburetor. My lawn mower gave me problems a year after buying it and it was because I had flooded the carburetor with too rich of a mixture of fuel. It cost about $80 to have your carburetor overhauled at a lawn mower repair shop.
