Reviews of the 2006 Mini Cooper - 2007 Mini Cooper - Mini Cooper S:
The Mini Cooper is a popular car that is similar to the VW Beetle in that it draws eyeballs when you first see it because it looks different and is cute. In 1960 the Mini Classic was marketed at about $786 in the U.S, but after 1968 the Mini found it was taken off the market due to emission regulations. BMW acquired the Mini brand in 1994 and in 2002 brought the Mini Cooper back to American shores. The 2006 Mini Cooper has 6 airbags, an ultra rigid body, a 4 cylinder engine that produces 115 HP and gets 28/36 mpg. It has a 5-speed manual transmission with a top speed of 125 MPH. The Mini Cooper is offered in white, chili red, black, silver, space blue, racing green, and grey. The base MSRP for the Mini Cooper is $18000. The Mini Cooper comes in a hardtop or convertible style. Details can be found at MiniUSA.com.
The 2007 Mini Cooper S is the real deal. With a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine that supplies 168 horsepower and 25/32 mpg, we love this car which sells for roughly $21500. The front suspension is a MacPherson Strut and the rear is a multi-link suspension. The Mini Cooper S convertible goes for $25950 and you can get an additional add-on package with a JCW Engine Kit, JCW Sport Brake Kit w/ limited slip differential for $6300 more. John Cooper, who recently died, was the inventor of this incredible car and we expect to see more them on the road in the future as gas prices stay high and smaller cars become more popular again. I must admit that for safety reasons alone, I would probably never buy one of these cars since taking my kids around in it could be dangerous. On the other hand, having it as a weekend car just for casual driving could be fun. Maybe I'll wait for the 2007 Mini Cooper or 2008 Mini Cooper so that they can weed out all the problems with the current models. With BMW behind the production and manufacturing of the Mini Cooper, we suspect the car will only improve on their looks, performance and safety.
Mini Cooper Parts - Dealers:
Mini Cooper owners are notorious for truly "loving" their cars and they would practically do anything to keep it running before just junking it. Therefore, the community of online enthusiasts for Mini Coopers has helped spawn web stores that carry just MINI parts. MiniSpares.com claims to carry over 9000 Mini Cooper parts (both for Classic Minis and modern day Minis). The site is essentially broken down into the pre-2001 models and the 2001-current models with custom gauges, exhaust and manifold parts, gearboxs, wheels, cooling and heating, drivetrains, brakes, cables, badges, stickers, fuel and filters. A new Mini Cat Back System in Stainless Steel sells for about $600. There is a helpful section on "fitting instructions" (you will need to be an online customer to get access) and well as a forum to discuss your car with fellow enthusiasts. MiniMania.com is another site which exclusively handles Mini Coopers (Classic Austin Mini Coopers and BMW Mini Coopers). You can get Mini Cooper Body Kits, performance parts, articles and tech tips, and even get on their mailing list to always be updated when new things come to market. They offer free downloads on installation instructions that come in a ZIP file. You can find your local Mini Cooper Dealer by going online to MiniUSA.com and typing in your ZIP code.
Used Mini Coopers
Are you in the market for a good used Mini Cooper. If you are looking for a pre-2001 model, odds are you will have to look overseas to acquire one since BMW didn't start selling the current models until after 2001. In any event, the newer models will definitely be easier to buy so let's assume you are looking in the U.S. for the new BMW Mini Coopers. Start by going to Kelly Blue Book (Kbb.com) and get an idea what to expect to pay for the year you are interested in. Then do some research on possible problems or issues that year Mini has. Then search online using sites like CarsDirect.com, Ebay Motors, or Autobytel.com to locate a Mini Cooper in your area. Have a certified mechanic ready to do a quick diagnostic on the car so that when you are ready to buy there are no holdups. Mini Mania (the site mentioned above) has an online section with used cars, mostly the vintage or pre-2001 models (1959-2000) if those are the years that interest you the most.
