2006 Porsche Boxster - Porsche 911

Porsche has been making the famous Porsche 911 for more than 40 years (back when 911 only brought up images of the car, not the emergency number of the famous attack). The earliest version of the car was released in 1963 and was called the 901. By 1965, it had taken on the moniker and styling of the Porsche 911 we know and love today. In 1965 the Porsche 911 Targa was unveiled, with its prominent roll bar (targa means shield). The Porsche interior has always been rather spartan, with a 5 dial gauge display on the dash and a minimum of frills in terms of interior creature comforts - the Porsche 911 was about handling and power and performance.

History of the Porsche 911 - 2007 Porsche 911 pictures, prices

For Porsche afficionados looking for a complete history of the 911 design, check out idee.demon.nl. Kevin has a great site with Porsche photos, Porsche tech specs, and information and history on all the Porsche models. The 2006 Porsche 911 has a list price of $71K, and packs a 325HP, 3.6L engine (0-60mph in 4.8 sec). Like all Porsche designs, the rear engine placement leaves you with a light front end, and small trunk space under the front hood, which always confuses and confounds new Porsche owners for the first few months. Nothing more embarrassing than lifting the hood to show your friends the engine and finding only a tire iron, some tennis balls, and bottled water. These are well-built cars that can easily be passed down to the next generation if properly cared for. As the Porsche website says, "The 911’s rigid monocoque body is sculpted from high-strength, dual-sided galvanized steel. More than 25 years ago, Porsche became the first automobile manufacturer in the world to use a hot-dip galvanized steel shell. Today, this exacting process is a fundamental part of the 911’s legendary longevity and durability. To guard against corrosion, the entire body undergoes a multi-step treatment of coatings and quality inspections." In other words, it won't rust and fall apart on you!

Porsche Boxster 986 - prices, Boxster Pictures

A lot of people can't seem to spell the name of this car (not Porche Boxter or Porshe Boxter), but they know it when they see it. The convertible Boxster was first available in the US in 1997. The boxster is powered by a flat six boxer engine (water cooled 6 cylinder, 2.5L, 201HP), hence the name from combining "boxer" and "roadster". The standard equipment on the Boxster is excellent: ABS, 5 speed manual transmission, power steering and brakes, anti-theft wheel bolts, integrated roll bar, partial leather seats, and the list goes on. Base price is $45,000 for the 2006 Porsche Boxter. The Boxster S is the upgraded model, with 280HP, 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds, and a sticker price of $54,700. Finding a Boxster dealer near you should not be a problem, although the cars themselves are sometimes in short supply and hard to come by. Be prepared for a waiting list and prices close to sticker price. You can find a dealer from the main Porsche website, Porsche.com/usa.

Porsche Cayenne 4x4

In 2003 Porsche launched its first 4x4 SUV, the Porsche Cayenne. Many people originally ridiculed the Cayenne, but it quickly won over converts with its agility and toughness, and legendary Porsche performance and handling. The high-end version comes with a 4.5L V8 engine packing 340HP. It has standard SUV gas mileage - 18 highway, 14 city. If you want buying information or specs on the Cayenne, Porsche will send you a free CD-ROM with all the details you need. Porsche Cayenne prices range from $42K for the base model to $90K for the top of the line turbo tiptronic. Three versions of the Cayenne are offered: base, S and Turbo. The base model comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, 12-way power seats, leather seating, and a 12-speaker CD stereo. The S model adds 18-inch wheels and an upgraded Bose stereo system. The top-line Turbo Tiptronic provides automatic ride height and damping adjustment (Porsche Active Suspension Management), bi-HID headlights, navigation system, seat memory, heated seats front and rear, and front/rear parking assist (also offered as expensive options on the other Cayennes). $90K is a lot to pay for an SUV - be sure to check out the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator and Range Rover before plunking down all that cash for a Porsche. But if you are Porsche fan, it is the only way to go.
