The 2006 Toyota Corolla CE ($14105) is the bare bones model with few extras, but you do get the standard 1.8 liter 16-valve WT-I 4 cylinder engine with 126 horsepower. You can upgrade to a 4-speed automatic transmission, but the 5-speed manual overdrive is standard equipment. The manual transmission delivers 32 city and 41 highway mpg which is what the American public needs to consider in the current gas crisis. Smaller cars like the Toyota Corolla don't give up much on safety with front and rear crumple zones, airbags, and anti-theft engine immobilizer. The warranty is a touch skimpy at 36 months/36,000 miles on all components and 60 months/60,000 miles on the powertrain (engine, transmission, etc).
