DVD Burner Reviews and Buying Guide:

DVD burners are slowly eliminating the need for CD burners on computers (much like VCR's are being replaced by DVD players). DVD burners can do all that CD burners can do and much more. The newest DVD burners can read CD-ROMs like music CDs and play DVD videos/movies. They can also write and read data on a CD-R disc, DVD-R and DVD+R. A DVD burner can read and write data on rewritable DVDs like DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and DVD-RAM. I know all the formats seem a little confusing, but the basic concept of burning a DVD stays the same. As for understanding the "X" ratings for a DVD burner, an example is one rated at 8X/4X/12X. It means that it can write DVDs at 8X, rewrite at 4X and read at 12X. If a DVD burner writes at 1X it is equivalent to about 1.4MB per second. The faster it can write means less time waiting. Most DVD formats hold about 4.7GB on a single layer disc and almost double that on a dual layer disc.

When you buy new desktop or laptop computers these days, almost all come equipped with a DVD burner/driver and not with CD drives. You can buy either an internal DVD burner for your computer or an external DVD burner. Internal dvd burners are cheaper and usually better than their external counterparts. The big hassle with buying an internal dvd burner after you've already purchased your computer is that you will need to install it. The external DVD burners, on the other hand, require you to plug in just a few cables to your computer and you're done. The great advantage of having an external dvd burner is that they are quite portable which means they can be taken from computer to computer in a small office environment or shared within a household. To connect a DVD burner (external) to your computer you'll need a Firewire or USB 2.0 port. Movie companies have become wary of just how powerful and fast the latest dvd burners are and they're concerned that piracy will become rampant. The record industry is still trying to recover from music downloads and now the movie industry is worried about movies being copied to DVD and uploaded or downloaded online and given away free of charge. DVD burning software is included (almost always) when you purchase a DVD burning drive. The bundled software is not always the full version of the software, but should be sufficient enough to do the basics of burning to DVD. The most widely recognized and popular dvd burning software is Nero. CNET recommends using Nero 6.0 Ultra and Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.0. There are dozens of other free dvd burning software programs on the Internet, so feel free to experiment and find one that you like. The top manufacturers of DVD burners are Plextor, Sony, LG, Pioneer, Lite-On, Samsung. The latest Blu-ray internal DVD burners are just hitting the market and can hold an incredible 25GB of data on a single layer disc, but they are way too expensive to justify buying at this time. We went online to the top DVD burner review sites like CDfreaks.com, Tomshardware.com, CDRlabs.com, and PCMag.com to get an understanding of which models are the best as rated by experts and consumers alike. We have tried to list the top ranked dvd burner in different categories down below. RECOMMENDED - We suggest shopping online at Amazon.com since they carry all the leading brands and usually offer the lowest prices on the Internet. You can browse their top selling DVD burners online here.

Best DVD Burner:

Plextor is one of the top names in DVD burners and the Plextor PX-760A Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer is considered a "top buy" and gets excellent ratings from customers and experts at Tomshardware.com. The dual layer DVD burner is now selling under $100 which makes it a bargain. In terms of performance, you get the fastest write times, up to 18X on DVD+/-R discs. Users say the bundled software included (Plextools and Roxio 7 Basic) are easy to work with and makes DVD burning a breeze. The Plextor internal dvd burner does not offer LightScribe labeling, but it does offer a 1 year limited warranty. The Plextor dvd burner is compatible with both Mac and Windows.

External DVD Burner:

Sony is a recognized name in almost all electronic products we see in America and their Sony DVDirect VRD-MC1 is an "Editor's Choice" award winner on PC Magazines website. We found it for less than $200 on TigerDirect. This is an excellent external dvd burner with the capability to record DVD-R at 16X, rewrite at 6X for DVD-RW, record at 16X for DVD+R, and a double layer record speed of 8X on a DVD+R. Users say the input capabilities of the Sony dvd burner are what set it apart. The Plextor PX-755UF ($160) is another top ranked external dvd burner and one that we recommend for those with laptops.

Cheap DVD Burner:

Although we found several comments from experts in the DVD burner field telling end users to stay away from cheap burners, we did find one that stood out amongst the others as a solid buy with favorable reviews. The LG GSA-H10N 16x "Super-Multi" DVD±RW/RAM ($50) supplies all your burning needs at a discounted price compared to the competition. It's capable of 16x DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 10x DVD+R DL and 6x DVD-R DL writing speeds. The LG dvd burner can also read and write to DVD-RAM media at 12x. The software bundle with this burner has the user friendly Nero dvd burning software and Cyberlink.

Blu-ray Internal DVD Burner:

If you want to be at the forefront of technology when it comes to DVD burners, look at the newer Blu-ray internal burners (DVD). They store way more data than traditional DVD burners, but you will pay a much higher price for that benefit. Otherwise, it's hard to justify spending $600 or more on a Blu-ray DVD burner when you can get a comparable internal or external DVD burner for well under $200. The Lite-On DH-4B1S was rated very high on several sites for its functionality and performance. Another thing to consider before buying any Blu-ray dvd burner is that the price of each disc is close to $20 and you will be disappointed to know that they can only be on other Blu-ray products. Blu-Ray is currently in a so called "format war" with a rival format called HD DVD. The average user will not need a Blu-ray DVD burner since the only real advantage over basic burners is increased storage space at this time.
