Application servers handle all the technical work for you. Oracle, Rackspace, Intel, and sun Microsystems are large companies involved in the application server business. Oracle and Sun deliver the applications and Intel supplies the server itself. IBM has been the leader for years and has the most experience in this field, but their lead is shrinking as HP and Dell dig in. IBM has always been associated with larger Fortune 500 companies and they are less able to react and custom fit smaller businesses like Dell or even HP. Not everyone needs a high powered $6000 dedicated server for their company. Dell does an excellent job of putting together custom servers (web, application, email, exchange, backup, etc) that will get the job done at a cheap price. HP, due to Dell being in the market, has reduced their pricing as well and can offer cheap servers. Compare prices and get what you need. The used server market has also picked up. Many companies that are going out of business or downsizing list their used web servers on Ebay or other auction sites. Take a look and see what kind of bargain servers you can find.
