Playstation Portable (PSP) Gaming System: Review, Pictures
Sony brings the PS2 down to a portable size (6.7" x 2.9" x .9", 6oz.), so now you can carry an electronic gaming system in your backback. Released in early 2005, the PSP is more than just a game machine - it also plays specially formatted UMD (universal media disc) movies (like mini DVDs), it lets you store and view photos on Sony Memory Stick Duo cards, play MP3 and MP4 and WAV music files, and lets you access the Internet wirelessly through its built in web browser. But of course the PS is famous as a gaming platform, and the PSP delivers the same level of graphics and gaming experience you would find on a PS2, just on a smaller screen. And while the Nintendo DS has been the big volume seller in the handheld arena, truth is, for more intense gaming and better graphics, the PSP is where it is at.
Sony PSP - Best PSP Games, Cheats
A big complaint about many Sony products is the propietary storage formats they use - from special memory cards for PS2 systems, to Betamax tapes, to Memory Sticks for digital cameras. Well, Sony has done it again - twice. The PSP plays DVD style movies - great way for portable entertainment, right? Wrong, it plays only special Sony UMB discs, which are like mini DVDs, but that copy of Spiderman you have at home on DVD has to be REPURCHASED for another $20 or whatever, even though you already bought it for $24 a year ago - bad! So normal DVDs WILL NOT PLAY on a Sony PSP, remember that.
OK, that brings us to games. Know all those awesome PS2 games you have bought over the years? Well, Sony has good news for you. Go out and buy them again in PSP format! Hey, what a great idea, Sony. So you really need to think of the PSP as a brand new gaming and portable video system, totally disconnected from anything you have in your home - it will not work with your existing games or movies, and requires a significant investment in new media formats. Anyways, the most popular games for the PSP are Lumines (a puzzle game), Grand Theft Auto Liberty City, Daxter, Star Wars Battlefront II, Final Fantasy, LocoRoco, Need for Speed Most Wanted, FIFA Soccer 2007, and SOCOM Fireteam Bravo. Most of these games cost $15-$25, but agani keep in mind they will play ONLY on your PSP, not your PS2 or other device. If you're looking for PSP game cheats, check out GameZone.com or Cheats.cc - you'll find game tips for things like Dragon Ball Z, Burnout Dominator, 300: March to Glory, and much more.
Admittedly, the design is classic Sony crispness and elegance. Nice looking product. The PS2 style graphics are excellent. The left side of the unit has a directional keypad for use by your left thumb, while the right side has the tradional X, O, etc. buttons for shooting, jumping. The UMD drive is on the back of the unit, and it pops open like a camcorder tape drawer - pop in your disc and it closes back up tight. The headphone jack is on the bottom left. The display is a 4.3-inch TFT LCD with a 480x272-pixel resolution and 16 million colors. Battery life is good for about 5 hours of gameplay. There are already many PSP games available, and more are added each month. However, 2006 will feature the release of the PS3 Playstation - might be worth waiting for if you are not already tempted by the XBox 360.
Price is $250, which gets you a 32MB memory stick (32MB? Come on Sony, how abou 256MB or something, which costs all of $20 or so), battery pack, AC adaptor, headphones, and carrying case.
