Apple Video iPod MP3 Player Review

The new Video iPod from Apple again ups the ante in the portable media player / MP3 player game. The first thing to note though, is that Apple does NOT call this product a Video iPod. It is simply the latest version of the iPod, and it happens to play video as well as display photos and play MP3 files like its predecessors. So like the iPod Nano replaced the iPod Mini, this new Video iPod replaces the old standard iPods (classic?). Like its predecessors, this version of the iPod can easily handle all your music files, especially with the ever-popular link to iTunes, the #1 online digital music store. And while the screen is not huge, for most TV shows the dialogue and sound are what you really need to enjoy the program, even if you are straining your eyes to see the details on the mini viewing screen that is provided.

There have been a few design changes and improvement. The first is a larger 2.5" color display screen for viewing those videos and pictures. The overal width of the iPod is the same, but the screen portion itself is larger, moving closer to the edges of the player. Apple has made some deals with ABC to make TV shows available for download (sorry, no free TV Show downloads) for $1.99 the day after the episode airs (currently Desperate Housewives, Lost, and some others) - downloads are managed through the ever popular iTunes store front. Some other popular shows available for digital download to your iPod include The Office and Battlestar Galactica.

Battery life has also been improved, up to 20 hours now on a charge (music playback only on the 60GB model, 14 hours on the 30GB model). For video playback though, you are looking and only 2-3 hours of playback - NOT 20 hours. A two hour fast charge will give you 80% of battery life. They have shrunk the depth of the iPod as well, with the 30GB unit being only .43" thick. So essentially you have a new leaner, sleaker, video-enabled iPod. And of course in crisp white and now black as well, just like the iPod nano. So that's the basics - if your old iPod has seen better days or you are looking to join the iPod generation, Apple has fortunately planned the product release just in time for the Christmas season! Enjoy.
