It seems thay anything having to do with electronics (computer, tv's, stereos, digital cameras) Sony dominates the field. So with digital cameras, it's nothing new to see Sony the leader in technology and product innovations. Sony digital cameras are always top sellers on Amazon.com, with the Cybershot being the best. Sony has broken down their digital camera selections into 4 groups - DSLR, Point and Shoot, Ultra-Compact, and Full-Featured. The average photographer (beginner to intermediate digital camera users) should stick with the Point and Shoot and Ultra-Compact products which are easy to use, small, and portable. The DSLR cameras offer more lenses, higher megapixels, and the ability to print out high quality photos in larger sizes. Some general guidelines are below on what to look for in a new digital camera in terms of features.

First thing to consider when buying a digital camera is the megapixel #, we suggest anything with at least 10-megapixels or higher. A 4x zoom lense is also recommended along with a 8GB memory storage card from SanDisk. Remember that just like computers, digital cameras come down in price every 6 months or so. That said, whatever you buy today will seem like a bargain in 6 months, but you can't avoid that, so just buy what you want knowing you will probably be buying another camera in a few years. Amazon offers great reviews and ratings for each camera by actual owners for the best, unbiased point of view. Regular brick and mortar stores like Best Buy carry Sony digital cameras. Often, you can get a discounted Sony digital camera when buying a Dell computer/laptop. It's part of a package deal that many computer OEMs do. Another feature to consider is ease of use. I recently bought a Canon PowerShot for my wife and it's literally too small. She can even read the back of the camera where you have to select all the functions. So keep that in mind, a tiny digital camera may not make the most sense if your vision isn't perfect. Most cameras come with some kind of software that once installed runs all the photo transfers from camera to computer for you. Sony DSLR Digital Cameras - Full Features Digital Cameras:
The lineup of new Sony DSLR digital cameras is small, but they are impressive w/ features that will let you take great pictures at high resolutions. The Sony Alpha A330L features 10.2 MP with their Super Steadyshot image stabilization adn 18-55mm lens. The 2.7 inch Clear Photo lcd display lets you check out each photo after you have taken it. The camera is compatible with high capacity Memory Stick Pro Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and SD/SDHC media. It is priced at less than $500 and considered a great camera in this price category as compared to Canon and Nikon. Owners describe it as "easy, quick and foolproof". For those looking for an entry level DSLR, it's a nice step up from the point shoot variety.

Sony Point and Shoot Digital Cameras - Ultra Compact Digital Cameras:
For all the basic photo ops you will come across (birthday, weddings, graduations, traveling) the Sony point and shoot cameras are great. Not only are these easy to use, they are lightweight and can be carried in a pocket or purse. The Cyber-shot DSC-W100 Digital Camera ($349.95) comes with more than enough megapixels (8.1) for great photos and a 64MB internal memory card. The Cyber-shot DSC-W70 Digital Camera for $299.95 is still a great value at $299.95 and offers Stamina battery power. The Cyber-shot DSC-W50 Digital Camera, Cyber-shot DSC-W30 Digital Camera and Cyber-shot DSC-S600 Digital Camera are cheaper models, but still shoot high quality images. The ultra-compact and slim digital cameras a touch more expensive given you get a thinner design and better technology in a smaller camera. Our only drawback to these smaller digital cameras is that they are often hard to hold. They can be so small and slick that getting a steady hold of them can be difficult. The top end model is the Cyber-shot DSC-T30/B Digital Camera ($499.95) and comes with an InfoLithium battery, stabilization mode, and 3X optical zoom lens. The Cyber-shot DSC-N1 Digital Camera ($449.95) is a touch cheaper and can store up to 500 VGA images and has a 3.0" LCD monitor. The Cyber-shot DSC-T9 Digital Camera ($399.95) is the hottest new camera to hit the stores and has all the standard features that are perfect for the first time buyer. The low end model is the Cyber-shot DSC-T5 Digital Camera offered in Silver/Black for $249.95.

Buy Digital Camera:

Before buying a digital camera, read some reviews on sites like Amazon or CNET to get a feel for features and what is worth the extra money and what is not. Most people say anything beyond 6 megapixels is too much for the occassional user and the video recording capabilities are still to new to really be used effectively in these cameras, so stay with the mindset you are buying a digital camera that takes pictures. Go to your local camera shop to hold the newest digital cameras. As we mentioned earlier, they can be awkward at first since they are so small and slim. Lastly, ask friends and family which models and brands they have and if the like them.
