Dental Schools - Best Dental School:

Are you ready to head off to dental school? Have you met the requirements needed to get in? Going to dental school is a big commitment and worth considering only if you are dedicated as a person and a student. It takes a college degree and 4 more years of schooling to become a dentist. There are only 57 accredited dental schools in the United States and just 10 in Canada. We found many websites that have posted an unofficial Top 10 list of the "best dental schools" and unfortunately there is no official list. Even the ADA (American Dental Association) does not have a ranking system in place for schools. In past years the US News and World Report was able to rank the schools based on their own methodology and criteria, but some dental schools were upset and complained so now the reports have been removed. Some of the schools we found listed most were UNC Dental School, USC Dental School, and Harvard Dental School.

As most dentists and students in online forums mention, the best dental school is the one you get into and that makes perfect sense to us. We have put together a list of some of the more reputable dentistry schools down below to give you an idea of which ones are worth considering. Many claim that UMB is #1 with their technology and then there are arguments for Harvard and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. We found dozens of online posts by current students, past students, and even staff (left anonymously of course) which all had valid points as to which school should be rated the best. Ultimately, like choosing a college, you need a good fit between quality professors, a solid education, excellent clinical experience, and strong research. You can make a strong statement for just about any of the schools we have listed below - apply to several and work hard once admitted.

How do you become a dentist? You need 8 years of college (including dental school) in order to obtain a degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). There are state tests that all dentists need to pass if they want a license as well. The good news is that the average salary for an independent private practitioner with a general practice is about $200,000 and a specialist gets closer to $300,000. Experts recommend that you apply to dental school at least 1 year in advance. The application process for students and the admitting staff can be tedious. The admissions committee will reviews your application based on DAT (Dental Admissions Test) scores, grade point average (GPA), personal interviews, any letters of recommendation you may have, and dental office experience. The personal interview is perhaps the most stressful part of the process for most incoming students. They will be assessed on their abilities to work independently, how they get along with others, do they possess self confidence, are they really interested in helping those in need of dental work. The positive side of the interview for students is that you get the opportunity to ask questions about the program, staff, school environment, type of experience you gain, etc. If you have any questions about dentistry in general, the best site to visit is Ada.org - the official website for the American Dental Association. It's loaded with information for dental professionals, high school and college students thinking about becoming a dentist, and how to find a dentist in your local area.

Top Dental Schools - Rankings:

Unlike the other leading graduate schools that allow the U.S. News and World Report to rank them, we found that the deans of several dentistry schools eventually got the ranking system dropped. Now it's really public opinion that sways incoming students to choose one of the top schools of dentistry. Below is an unofficial list of the Top 10 dental schools in the United States and Canada. We have provided the website of each dentistry school so you can visit it and research their programs.
  • University of Maryland at Baltimore (UMB), Baltimore College of Dental Surgery
  • Harvard University, School of Dental Medicine
  • The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Dental School
  • University of North Carolina, School of Dentistry
  • University of Michigan, School of Dentistry
  • The University of Toronto, The Faculty of Dentistry
  • University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine (UPenn)
  • McGill University, Faculty of Dentistry

Maryland Dental School:

Having the unique distinction of being the first dental college in America, the University of Maryland at Baltimore (UMB) ranks right up there with any dental program. The college was recently renovated and the curriculum is always being updated to meet the latest standards and technology in the world of dentistry. Students are mixed on the staff - some say they are great and others mention the lack of interest shown by several faculty members. The reputation of the school has carried it this far and it's certainly one of many dental schools you should consider before committing to a single institution.

Dental School Requirements:

Every dental school has slighly different requirements for acceptance into their program, but you will find a basic set of courses and examinations that are commonly accepted as requirements (see below).
  • 8 hours of coursework in the following classes (Biology w/ lab, English, Physics, general Chemistry w/ lab, and organic chemistry w/ lab)
