What are IQ Tests? IQ stands for intelligence quotient, and is meant to be a numerical measure of someone's intelligence, relative to the rest of the test population. Most IQ tests are designed to measure people who have an average IQ of about 100, with a standard deviation of around 10. So if you score between 90-110 on a standard IQ test, you are considered to be of average intelligence. Once you move 2 standard deviations above or below 100 (80-90 or 110-120), you are considered below or above average. At the third standard deviation above, 120-130, you are highly intelligent, and 130-140 means you are gifted. If you manage to top out over 140, that puts you in genius territory. On the bottom end, if you rate 70 and below, you are classified as mentally retarded (mild 55-70, 40-55 moderate, 20-40 severe). IQ is associated with many other factors in life, such as high school drop-out rate, poverty levels, and likelihood of having low IQ children -- if you have a low IQ, you have a many times higher rate of falling into these classifications than someone with a high IQ does.

How can I measure my IQ? What is my IQ score? As noted above, you need to take an IQ test to figure out your IQ score. IQ Tests usually measure things like vocabulary and verbal analogy skills, visual memory, spatial reasoning, pattern recognition, mathematic skills, and factual knowledge. You can find some free online IQ tests at places like FunEducation.com or HighIQSociety.org or IntelligenceTest.com. IntelligenceTest.com gives you a standardized 30 question test that is automatically scored after 15 minutes - you need to move through it at a fairly quick pace to finish. You are requested to enter your email address and some basic information, but you will be presented with your score at the end of the test regardless of what you enter - I wish sites measuring something personal like IQ would not request any information about you. Anyways, whenever you take an IQ test, take it with a grain of salt. Let's say you are tired and not paying attention, you might only get through half the questions and get a low score, but if you took it wired on caffeine a week later and got through all the questions you would score higher. Ideally, you should take several IQ tests over a span of time to get a feel for your actual, normal score. You can also get IQ test books at Amazon.com, like Test Your IQ by Munzert ($6), and The Big Book of IQ Tests, by Sullivan ($10).
IQ Test History - Children's IQ Tests
Alfred Binet began working on intelligence tests in the early 1900s, publishing a test called the Binet-Simon intelligence scale, hoping to idenity students who needed extra help in school. By 1912, the tests had progressed and the words intelligence quotient, or IQ, was being used. Work was done at Stanford University over the next few years to come up with the Stanford-Binet Scale. The tests have changed slightly over the years, but normally include the same type of questions with adjustments made for the age of the test taker. Most IQ tests are meant to measure a specific range of the IQ scores with relative accuracy. For example, high genius IQs cannot be measured accurately using a standard IQ test with an expected mean of 100 -- a test with an expected mean of 140 is needed to measure the deviations above or below this with any meaningful accuracy. In general, men and women have the same average IQ scores across the sexes, but men have a higher percentage at the extremes mixed into their population - ie, more men dopes and more men geniuses compared to women.
