Why choose Home Schooling? Home School Curriculum:

Home schooling is not exactly a new concept as most of children in America were home schooled up until about 1850. Recently, with the decline of public school systems and an increase in parental awareness, home school has become quite popular with almost 2-3 million kids in the U.S. learning at home. There are many children who learn at home for religious purposes, but many adults choose to keep their kids out of the school systems for other educational reasons. As a parent myself, my only concern would be can I supply my child with a quality educational experience at home. Do I have the proper knowledge and teaching capability to do it? I have both watched on TV and read in magazine articles the pitfalls of teaching at home and realize there is a fine line between helping and hurting your childs educational and emotional wellbeing. I have known friends that wanted to teach their children at home and I've always felt you can only teach your kids what you know (which can be lacking in many fields). That is why we have teachers in specific topic areas once kids reach about 7th grade and need to branch out. I do feel that most parents could teach their kids how to read, write and do math at a young age (I have done that with my own daughter), but teaching Chemistry, Physics, English Literature, etc. may not be so easy if you have a limited background to begin with.

When it comes to choosing a curriculum for your home school program, we recommend K12.com. They offer homeschool curriculums for home schoolers, virtual academy schools, and distance learning programs for elementary students. You can get certified curriculums in Language Arts/English, Math, Science, History, Art, and Music. For instance, the K12 Art curriculum "introduce students to great works from various cultures, eras, and movements while engaging them in creative activities—painting, drawing with colored pencils or chalk, weaving, or molding clay, etc". More often than not, concerned parents use the K12 system as a supplement to the education their children are already getting in regular school. The K12 Independence Subscription Plans are 1 year contract at $94/month for 6 courses. Ultimately it's up to you to determine how good the local schools are, is your child learning enough, and what else can you do to make them smarter and more aware of things in the world around them. I know this for certain, people never stop learning and kids absorb much more in a shorter period of time than do adults, so starting early is key in developing a solid education. Too many parents turn their kids over the state school systems and assume things will work out just fine, but in todays global economy, your child will be competing with kids from China and India thrive in mathematics and sciences. Jobs will not always be so easy to find unless you are well educated from an early age. California and Florida have the most home schoolers of any states.

Home School Worksheets:

There are lots of website that offer home school worksheets, many are for free. For math, we suggest trying http://www.homeschoolmath.net/worksheets/ with topics like decimal worksheets, addition worksheets, square roots, fractions, telling time, and percentage worksheets. An excellent resource for free home school worksheets can be found at http://www.homeschoolingadventures.com/worksheets.html. There you will find links to other sites offering alphabet worksheets, phonics worksheets, chemistry worksheets, algebra worksheets, bible activity worksheets, and geography worksheets. They have some great 2nd grader home school worksheets. Often parents request theme worksheets so that their kids will be more interested in a fun activity while still learning. We suggest the homeschool Disney Princess printable worksheets located at http://disney-stationary.com/disney-learning/disney-worksheets.php.

Home School Program - Home School Resources:

Before you start on your homeschooling curriculum, go to some homeschool sites and get an idea of what types of programs and resources exist for homeschool parents. Homeschoolcentral.com is a great site to start with. They have literally 1000's of links to sites that concentrate on certain topics like history, geography, foreign language, social studies, health, and spelling. You can also use their message boards to discuss dilemmas or problems you may be coming across with other homeschool parents and see what they did. Of course once you setup your homeschool program, you will need to buy homeschool supplies and materials like books and publications on all topics in your curriculum. We really like the Dhss.com site (Discount Home School Supplies) for their vast selection and easy searching availability on the webpages. Although many of the items on the site are directed to Christian Homeschool, we found plenty that weren't.

The 10 Most Important Things You Need to Know About Homeschooling (From Homeschooling.com):

  • Homeschooling is legal everywhere in the United States, but homeschooling laws vary from state to state. The three basic categories for homeschooling laws are: home education laws, private school laws, and equivalency laws. Contact a local support group in your area to find out details.
  • Homeschooling can be done in much less time than traditional schooling since there is so much 1 on 1 instruction
  • Homeschooling families learn together and know that learning is a life-long process.
  • You are qualified to homeschool your children if you love to read to them, love to spend time with them, love to explore the world with them, love to see them learn new things and, most important, love them
  • Homeschooling is life changing for both parent and child
  • Your child will not become a social misfit
  • It's ok to questions yourself during the process
  • You do not have to starve or live in a tent to homeschool your children
  • You will not have to teach algebra unless you really want to - they can self teach at a later age, get a tutor, community college classes
  • Trust in your child. They learned how to love, smile, crawl, walk, talk, run, dress themselves, and understand their world before starting school, and they will continue to grow and learn without school
