Online Education: Adult Education and Continuing Education

In the old days, getting a degree or taking classes for additional career training or education meant taking a LOT of time out of your busy work schedule, finding a qualified, accredited school or university nearby, and then driving back and forth to classes over periods of months and years to get your degree or certification. The Internet has changed a lot of that for the better. You can now take classes and earn a degree without ever leaving your home, thanks to a whole new world of online education. There is still a perception that online schools are not as good as "real schools", but most companies DO accept degrees from accredited online universities (be ware of phony schools that will try to "sell" you a diploma..)

Flexibility is one of the most popular reasons for selecting an online education. For most working adults with families, their schedule simply does not allow the regular full day class schedule of a normal college. By pursuing their further education online, they are able to get the education they need while maintaining their professional employment and advancement.

Choosing the right school for online degree

When it comes to selecting the right school, here are some things to consider. First, find out the costs - tuition, mandatory fees, etc. Find out about the teacher to student ratio. Will you have personalized access to the teaching staff? How (email, video conference, telephone)? What are the specific hardware requirements for online access, and how about specialized software? Is the school accredited? What programs/degrees do they offer? How long has the school been around? Can you work at your own pace, or must you follow a prescribed curriculum and timetable? You will have to do a good deal of research to find the school that is just right for you - there may be no "best" school, but if you come up with a list of the top 5 priorities you are looking for, that will help narrow down the search.

Career Education and Further Education, Online Courses

Your choice of fields of study will usually be limited only by your own interests and abilities. If you look at the top online schools, like Kaplan University, University of Phoenix Online, American Intercontinental, Capella University, Jacksonville University, Anthem College, Walden, Ellis College, Jones International, you can find degree and training programs in fields like: Business Administration, Human Resources, healthcare management, accounting and finance, information technology, computer science, teaching, paralegal and law, nursing education, humanities, journalism, math, physics, electrical engineering, e-commerce, technical writing, and much more. Most candidates have a educational goal already in mind - whether an MBA or additional computer science courses.

Researching Online Schools and Education

Check out EarnMyDegree.com for a listing of most schools and programs in all fields - business, law, health, science, etc. WorldwideLearn.com is another good site. They let you search for school and programs by topic, geographic location, etc. They have links to get brochures and information from all the top online education schools: Regis, Rasmussen, Salve Regina, ICS Canada, Jones International, DeVry University, ECPI Online, Cardean, University of Deleware, Villanova, Strayer, Keiser, and much more. University of Phoenix online is still the #1 choice for many working adults seeking a business degree or MBA. They have been around since 1976, long before the days of the Internet. University of Phoenix offers a number of certificates and bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in the following areas: accounting, business administration, counseling, criminal justice, e-Business, education, finance, global management, health administration, human resources, human services, information systems, management, marketing, MBA, nursing/heath care, public administration, retail management and software engineering and technology. Finally, for more ideas about getting started in education online, visit Edu-Directory.org. They have a nice cross-index by course, so you can click on something like Culinary Arts and be directed to those online schools offering programs in that field.
