The original Battlestar Galactica back in the 70's was a really bad show. Trying to ride on the coattails of Star Wars, it battled with other shows like Buck Rogers to see who could come up with the worst costumes, worst acting, and most mediocre stories. At the time, the special effects of space combat were considered to be pretty good, but it is painful to watch the series these days. The Sci Fi Network brought Battlestar Galactica back to life 2 years ago, with a miniseries first, then as a full fledged weekly space drama. The new Battlestar Galactica was based upon the basic story and plot of the original, but much of it has been re-imagined, with characters changing sexes (not through surgery, but simply as plot elements - the old fighter pilot Starbuck played by blond pretty boy Dirk Benedict in the original is now played by a tough, gritty woman, Katee Sackhoff) and much more richly detailed characters and plots.
The main plot of Battlestar Galactica focuses on a rag tag band of space craft, huddled around the giant "battleship" called Galactica. These are the human survivors of an attack by the robotic Cylons who carried out a sneak attack on the 12 human colonies. With their worlds destroyed, they are constantly pursued and infiltrated by the Cylons as they try to make their way to a mythic location called "Earth". While the Cylons normally appear in their own distinctive space craft or as terminator-like robots, newer models are indistinguishable from humans, blurring the lines of who is friend and who is enemy, and raising questions about religion, warfare, prejudice, politics, and destiny. While the special effects remain excellent, the plot, characters, and acting really drove Battlestar Galactica through Season 1 and Season 2. The lead actors are Edward James Olmos, as Admiral Adama, Mary McDonnell as Pres. Laura Roslin, as James Callis as Gaius Baltar, the lovely Tricia Helfer as Number 6, Jamie Bamber as Lee Adama (Apollo), Katee Sackhoff as Kara Thrace (Starbuck), and Grace Park as Sharon Valerii (Boomer). The show airs on SciFi network every Friday at 9PM/8C.
Battlestar Galactica Season 3 for iPod Video Downloads
With 2 seasons under their belt, the launch for Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica is set for Oct. 6 2006. At the end of season 2, we saw the presidency under Gaius Baltar surrender to the Cylons and revert to debauchery as Cylons took control over the remaining human survivors on the planet Caprica, deserted by the fleet. Season 3 promises to give us more on the human/Cylon hybrid child, the fate of the crew, and the inner working of the Cylon ships and culture. Sci Fi was one of the earliest networks to set up deals with Apples iTunes online store to sell and distribute episodes of Battlestar Galactica in 2005. Individual episodes sell for $1.99 each and can be played on your computer or iPod Video. You can buy all the episode in Season 1 or Season 2 for $25. Of course Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica and Season 4 of Battlestar Galactica will also be available at iTunes. For non-Tivo users who are fans of Battlestar Galactica, this is a great way to catch up if you miss an episode or two. The official Battlestar Galactica webpage is http://www.scifi.com/battlestar. They offer detailed episode guides for each show, behind the scenes news and interviews, podcasts from the producer with commentary on each episode, even tours and facts about each of the ships in the fleet.
Battlestar Galactica Blog and Gifts
If you want to keep up on news, trivia, and info about the show, check out Producer Ron Moore's blog at http://blog.scifi.com/battlestar/. You'll get a little insight to the show here, but unfortunately the posts are few and far between. I think it is more for die-hard fans, not casual visitors. If you search for Battlestar Galactica toys and action figures and such, you will find a lot of old classic toys from the original series. If you are looking for merchandise based on the current show, you will have a tough time finding anything. Of course you can find Battlestar Galactica posters and DVDs, but that is about it.
