When I grew in the late 1970's, the hit movie Star Wars had us kids flocking to toy stores to buy action figures, trading cards, and costumes. Now, the big toy sales for Star Wars are all the lego sets they have designed over the years. I have a 5 year old and he is infatuated with the movies as well as all the Star Wars lego sets available for purchase. As a parent, I can only try to deter him from wanting all the sets. They are not only expensive, but some are extremely difficult to put together. His patience level is getting better, but many of the sets are meant for kids twice his age and then I end up putting them together.
Choosing the best Star Wars Lego Sets - The main thing to keep in mind is difficulty level and how many pieces represent an age appropriate lego set. All lego sets are marked with an "age" appropriate level, although I have found some to be easy although they were meant for 8 to 10 year olds. Use your best judgement as a parent and start with the basic sets to see how your child does. We have moved up to the 8 to 10 age level sets and my son is definitely doing ok. The next factor to consider are the pieces involved. The more pieces the more likely they are lost down the road and the set never is completed. Some of the expensive Star Wars lego sets are $500+ (for things like the Millennium Falcon, Death Star II, Star Destroyer, Cloud City, etc.) and require 500 to 2000 pieces to be put together. Obviously the building of the set will take hours and require the utmost patience which most 5 to 7 year olds don't have. Owner reviews are all very positive for these lego sets, but the one comment made most often is that the parent ended up doing most of the work. My problem is that some of the lego sets from Star Wars are great to look at when done, but trying to actually play with them is an entirely different scenario. We (my son and I) have found that some pieces simply fall off and are too fragile. Not to say they are broken, but you have to re-attach that section and it happens regularly with some of the sets. Overall, I am happy with the building process of legos since it gives my son a sense of accomplishment and his eye hand coordination with finding the pieces and putting them together has increased dramatically over the last year or so. My biggest complaint would be the price. Legos are cheap pieces of plastic that should only cost about $5 but they add on a brand name like Star Wars and increase the price 500%. My son will spend hours in his room building and playing so we have gotten our monies worth. RECOMMENDED - We suggest shopping online at Amazon.com since they carry a huge inventory of Star Wars legos and often have competitive pricing compared to Toys R Us, Target, and Walmart. Best Star Wars Lego Sets:
Which set is the best? It really comes down to how much work you want to do. The most expensive Star Wars lego sets require a lot of money and time. You'll find things like the Death Star, Republic Gunship, Imperial Star Destroyer, Millennium Falcon, Jabba's Sail Barge, and Clone Turbo Tank. Many are priced over $400 and will take a while to assemble. Most are incredible looking once put together and the vast majority are able to be played with and stay together well. My concern is that sometimes we will spend a few hours putting something together and then my son gets a bit rough with his play and part of it breaks off. He'll complain and then I have more work to do. That's the worst. I say start with the basic Star Wars lego sets here and see how they go. Many are priced between $20 and $50 and will get your collection started. I went to a Star Wars convention show one time and this guy had all the huge lego sets put together on display at his booth and they were amazing to look at. Truly collectors items.
