Online Dance Lessons - Learn How To Dance

You can't blame it on "Dancing with the Stars" -- people have always been intrigued by the rhythm, music, and movement of dance. The tango, hip hop, salsa dancing, mambo, waltz, ballroom dancing -- there are so many different styles, you could spend a lifetime perfecting them. But you need to start somewhere first, right? If you want to learn how to dance, you have a few options: go to a dance studio and take dance lessons there from an instructor (this can be one on one or in a class setting); have a friend teach you; get some dance videos that teach the steps and moves and let you practice at home; or try some free online dance lessons that are now available. In our opinion, the best way to learn how to dance is with an accomplished instructor, but if you are going for a more informal approach and you just want to pick up some move more modern than the foxtrot, some videos or online lessons might do the trick.

Formal Dancing Lessons

Learn To Dance ads were common back in the 50s and 60s, but they've been around longer than that. The Arthur Murray International Dance Studios are probably the most famous, having been around for more than 90 years, now with more than 200 franchised locations around the world (ArthurMurray.com). Arthur brought the thrill of ballroom dancing to life for countless students, but he began by selling dance instruction by mail in 1912 -- he'd be shocked to see what the internet revolution is doing these days! By the 40s Arthur had more than 70 dance instruction studios around the country, and they even had their own TV show during the 50s. If you visit their website, you can find the studio nearest to you and even print out a coupon good for a free dance lesson to see what it is all about. So whether you want to learn to dance as a hobby, to be ready for your upcoming wedding, for some romance with your significant other, as a way to meet people, or for exercise, consider a professional dance class like Arthur Murray.

Dance Lesson Videos - Learn to Dance DVDs

For those of you who aren't bold enough to shake your booty in a public dance studio, you might like get some practice and learn how to dance in the privacy of your own home. Hey, we all saw Napoleon Dynamite do it, right? There are all kinds of dance lesson videos and DVDs out there - just pop 'em into the TV, turn up the music, and follow along with the dancers on screen. The nice thing about videos is that you can move at your own pace and replay things over and over if you need to -- just like anything else, repetition is big when it comes to picking up rhythmic dance steps. Most dance lessons videos have an instructor demonstrating moves slowly at first, then combining moves with music for the whole dance. Most tapes are marked for beginners, intermediates, or advanced, so you'll want to make sure you pick up DVDs appropriate for your experience level. One dance site you can check out is LearnToDance.com - they have a complete library of dance lesson DVDs covering:
  • Argentine Tango (over a dozen DVDs, around 2 hours each, priced around $50)
  • Ballet
  • American Ballroom Dance (8 volumes, $47 each, around 70 minutes ea.)
  • International Ballroom
  • Breakdance
  • Country Western
  • Folk Dance
  • Hip Hop (5 DVDs, about $10-$15 ea)
  • Hustle
  • Jazz
  • Latin
  • Party Dancing
  • Salsa
  • Swing
  • Tap
Another good site for dance lesson DVDs is TheDanceStoreOnline.com. They carry a broad line of instructional dance videos. One sampling: Learn to dance... Waltz Volume 1: Beginner - Advanced, $30 for 2.5 hours of content on 2 DVDs, includes a printed step chart. But they offer way more than just traditional waltz lessons. They also have specialty Wedding and Night Club dance videos, merengue dance lessons, cha cha, rumba, salsa, tango, swing, hustle, and ballroom intro. Of course you can also check out the selection at Amazon.com or from your Netflix or Blockbuster online selection -- if you rent them, that is a particularly good way to try out some of these DVDs before committing too much to purchase them. Amazon carries titles like "Learn to Dance in Minutes - Party Dancing" ($13), "Ballroom 10 Dance Collection" ($29), "Learn to Salsa Dance", which is $40 but gets terrific reviews from satisfied customers.

Free Online Dance Lessons

A number of sites offer free online dance lessons or paid online dance lessons. They normally come with video or animation clips you can watch which demonstrate the various steps and movements. Some of the videos we watched were pretty grainy and of poor quality, but I suppose you could still see well enough to learn the steps - just not top-notch video quality. In our experience, we'd go with the dance instruction DVDs first which generally offer higher production values, but if you want to try some free online dance classes, check out some of these sites:
  • LearnToDance.com - they offer free online basic video lessons in Tango, Cha Cha, Foxtrot, Swing, Waltz, etc.
  • BustAMove.com - they have some simple flash animations showing certain dances and steps, site registration required for in depth lessons
  • Learning2Dance.com - they have some free online dance videos, and others that sell for $2
  • iDance.net - they offer free preview dance lesson videos across several dance styles, but you need to pay $1.99 to download the complete, better quality videos with music and vocal instructions.
