High School Musical:

High School Musical is a made for tv musical film released by Disney to the Disney Channel in 2006 and it has become a gigantic success considering it only took $5 million to make it. The story is about two students, Gabriella and Troy, who try out for the school play/musical and find success. Zac Efron plays Troy in the movie and Vanessa Anne Hughes plays Gabriella Montez. Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay Evans) and Lucas Grabeel (Ryan Evans) play a brother and sister duo who are drama students that always get important roles in the schools musicals until this year. The story is quite entertaining for all ages (I have a 5 year old that loves the show) with lots of singing and drama. With the sudden popularity the show has produced, Disney released a few other variations on the movie including a pop-up edition with interesting tidbits about the movie posted on the tv screen during the movie, a dance-along version where cast members show various dance moves during the breaks in the movie and the sing-along version which is a karaoke style variation with singing to soundtrack songs.

Disney is a marketing machine and they have done a great job of not only getting a DVD out but a complete soundtrack as well. There is currently a High School Musical concert tour going around the United States (without Zac Efron). High School Musical won an Emmy Award and was nominated for several others. The sequel, High School Musical 2, is due out in the summer of 2007 with almost all the original cast returning for the new movie. High School Musical DVD/CD:

On May 23, 2006 a High School Musical DVD was released and it was titled the High School Musical: Encore Edition. Both the original and sing along versions are included on the DVD. It was the fastest selling television of movie with over 1 million sales in the first week. If you are a fan of the show, the DVD will give you bonus features like Learning the Moves dance sequence shown by choreographer Kenny Ortega, the music video "I Can't Take MY Eyes off of You" and "We're All in This Together". Perhaps the best added feature of the DVD is the "Bringing it All Together" section on the making of High School Musical. The Soundtrack for High School Musical was released on January 10, 2006 and has sold over 3 million copies. The High School Musical CD features songs like Start of Something New, Get'Cha Head in the Game, What I've Been Looking For, Stick to the Status Quo, When There Was Me and You, Bop to the Top, Breaking Free, We're All in This Together, I Can't Take My Eyes Off You, and a few instrumental versions of Start of Something New and Get'cha Head in the Game.
