If you are visiting New York and planning on seeing a Broadway musical, it can sometimes be tough to decide what to see. Sometimes you have a favorite, sometimes you just take what tickets are available the night you are in the city. If you've never heard of the show Mamma Mia (now a movie as well), you've been missing out on a lot of great fun and music. Consider putting in on your list of shows to see in NYC. Strangely enough, the show is built around a collection of tunes from the 1970s Swedish musical quartet ABBA. You've probably heard of some of their songs like Dancing Queen, but they were approached in the late 80s with the concept of a theater show. A decade later, Mamma Mia hit the stage in 1999 in London. So what is Mamma Mia about? The simple summary is: takes place on a Greek island, a story about a young woman getting married, wants to have her father walk her down the aisle but doesn't know who her father is, invites the 3 men who may be her father to the wedding, though they haven't seen her or her mother in 20 years, her mother used to be part of a singing group, and the story unfolds from there. Mostly, the show is a celebration of ABBA's music (23 songs, yikes!) -- and it pretty much dominates the show. If you hate ABBA, it's probably not for you!
The official Mamma Mia website address is Mamma-Mia.com. From there you can access all kinds of info about the show. Want to download Mamma Mia songs? They are available on iTunes where you'll find the soundtracks to all the original Mamma Mia cast recordings - US, Germany, Spain, Sweden, London, etc. They've also got cast photos, history of the show, touring schedules, ticket information, and more.
Mamma Mia Musical in New York - The Winter Garden Theater
Mamma Mia in New York has been a smash success as well. It ranks among the top 20 longest running Broadway shows. After premiering in London, the show first came to the US in San Francisco in 2000, then finally opened on Broadway in October of 2001 at the Winter Garden Theater (1634 Broadway @ 50th Street), prior home of the legendary Cats. There are 5 matinee shows per week, Wed - Sun at 2PM (show lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes). Evening shows are Wed-Sat at 8PM, and Sunday at 7PM -- Monday and Tuesday are dark. How much are tickets for Mamma Mia? Mamma Mia tickets from the box office run $62, $86, and $111 (Wed shows are are about $10 cheaper). You can buy tickets by phone at 800-432-7250 or at TeleCharge.com. You can see a seating chart for Mamma Mia here. It's little known secret is that you can get standing room only tickets for $21.50 on the day of the show if the show is sold out - they go on sale 2 hours before the show starts, available direct from the box office at the Winter Garden -- only 2 per person though. If you don't mind standing or perhaps finding a vacant edge seat, not a bad deal.
Where else can I get Mamma Mia tickets? StubHub.com is a site that resells tickets and is now part of Ebay. You may get a deal on tickets here, but it seems most tickets sell for close to face value - try your luck. TicketsNow.com is another site for finding tickets from sources other than the box office - they are part of TicketMaster. Basically they act as a broker buying and selling tickets, guaranteeing the tickets authenticity. We checked some November dates in Louisville, KY and found tickets ranging from $140 to $364. December tickets in New Haven, CT were even more expensive -- $290 to $390. We also checked the direct link from the Mamma-Mia.com site for New Haven tickets which took us to Tickets.com where we found 2 orchestra tickets for $65 each. So lesson as always is, buy direct from the source when you can, since second hand scalped tickets almost always carry a large premium. If you are in New York you can try the TKTS booth in Times Square or at South Street Seaport -- they sell discount tickets for Broadway shows on that day. On a recent check we saw tickets for Mamma Mia at 35-45% off list price, available on most days of the show -- not a bad deal. Bring cash (they don't take credit cards -- be glad, this keeps the line moving fast!) and be prepared to wait in line. The digital sign above the booths will tell you what shows are available so you can check that before getting into line.
Mamma Mia Movie / Mamma Mia Lyrics / Mamma Mia Soundtrack
Mamma Mia the Movie opened in July of 2008, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan. You can check out reviews of it here. Critics give the Mamma Mia movie on average a B-, but that didn't keep it from bringing in more than $130M in US ticket sales. Fans like it even more, giving it an A-. So if you like the Broadway show, if you like the songs of ABBA, you'll probably like the movie as well. You can check out some movie clips and trailers here. Nothing like watching Meryl Streep bounce around on a bed like a trampoline while she sings! You can get the Mamma Mia soundtrack and download MP3 songs at iTunes for the usual 99 cents per song. Amazon.com and most other music retailers see the movie soundtrack for about $11-$12. You can also buy the MP3 album from Amazon for $8.99.
