My Scene Dolls:

My Scene fashion dolls were introduced in 2002 by Mattel to compete with the Bratz dolls. The My Scene line of dolls included 3 dolls originally but now there are 11 to choose from (both female and male). The 11 dolls are Barbie, Chelsea, Madison, Nolee, Delancey, Kenzie, Kennedy, Bryant, Hudson, River, Sutton, and Ellis. Barbie has since been dropped from the group. Many of the dolls include a pet. The My Scene dolls have a variety of ethnicities which make it a realistic American doll collection. My only issue with the My Scene dolls (and Bratz for that matter) is that they portray younger girls with clothes and fashion that are way too old for them. I have kept my 5 year old away from the Bratz line for this reason and will avoid the My Scene girls for a while too. I've seen the commercials for the My Scene dolls and playsets and the way the dolls talk (at least the voices done by the marketers) is way to "valley girlish" with too much emphasis on looks and clothes. I don't feel that helps build a young girls self esteem by always dwelling on how good looking you are or what kind of clothes you are wearing. Perhaps I'm naive, but I would rather not have my young daughter imitating Paris Hilton when she plays with dolls.

Since 2002 there are have been over a dozen lines with various themes released by My Scene. Some of the best sellers were "Spring Break", "Back to School", "Chillin Out", "Cruisin in my Ride", "Getting Ready: Out with the Girls", "Heartbreakers", "My Bling Bling", and "Juicy Bling". As you can tell by the titles of these lines, a younger girl (anyone less than 10) would not even know what they mean let alone understand how to play pretend with those scenarios. The playsets feature stylish designs and fun activities, but I would still keep littler girls away from them. There have several My Scene movies released over the years, mostly as a bonus with some of the playsets. I first discovered the My Scene dolls while on the Barbie.com website with my daughter. She wanted to see what the site was like so we clicked on the link and were introduced to the young, trendy dolls that act 10 years older than they really are. I have since banned my daughter from visiting the site, although as we will review below, there are some fun features like dress up games that older girls would definitely enjoy on the website. We will go into further details of the Myscene.com website below.

My Scene Movies (DVD) & Website:

In 2003 the marketers of the My Scene dolls started placing DVDs in some of the packages. These DVDs had music, activities, and short video clips on them as an added bonus. 3 My Scene movies have been released since - Jammin in Jamaica, Masquerade Madness, and My Scene Goes Hollywood. The first 2 were sold with the dolls and the last one, My Scene Goes Hollywood, was a full length movie with Lindsay Lohan. You can buy the My Scene Goes Hollywood DVD on Amazon.com for $15. The Myscene.com official site has plenty of interactive fun with games like Dazzling Nails, Room Makeover, Beauty Studio, Shopping Spree, and Fashion Designer. You can watch short run cartoons of Fab Faces, Mall Maniacs, Tis the Season, Secret Locker, Day & Nite, Club Birthday, and many more. There is of course an entire section devoted to online shopping and all the My Scene apparel you could ever want.

My Scene Playsets & Toys:

If you want to keep your daughter or niece happy this Christmas, then look into the My Scene dolls and playsets. They are definitely fun and very different than many of the other doll collections. We went to Amazon to see which sets are selling the best. As a parent you may wonder what the fascination is with all these toys, but kids love them with all the accessories and adult themes. There are almost 100 items to choose from on Amazon.com and many are only about $10-$15.
