Pokemon - Games - Toys:

Pokemon was originally started in Japan in the 1990's as a game, lost some steam and has become popular once again with video games, trading cards, toys, anime, manga and even a movie. I remember the Pokemon trading cards with characters like Pikachu, Bulbasaur, and Charmander. Many of the games were designed for the Game Boy and Nintendo is the current license holder for all the Pokemon video games. The Pokemon anime series and films have been successful as well and at one point there was Pokemon Live show that toured the United States and was based on the Pokemon anime series. All the new Pokemon products are related to the 4th generation video games on the market (we will discuss that below). There have been over 140 million copies sold of "Pokemon Games" which makes it 2nd only to the Mario series as the biggest selling game franchise ever. Beyond the video games, merchandising for Pokemon has recently hit all time highs with costumes, action figures, playsets and games. Below we will tell you which are the hottest sellers.

On a recent visit to Amazon.com, we decided to read reviews of the best selling Pokemon products and see which titles are the most popular per the owners. We came up with a short list (video games covered seperately below) - Pokemon Pocket Monsters Mini Playset with Pikachu & Nazonoku Figures ($5), Pikachu Pocket Monsters Collector's Figure 3-Pack ($5), Pokemon Advanced Pokedex, Master Trainer, Pikachu & Oddish Pokeball with Wind-Up Action, Virtual Trainer Basic Figure Pack: Brawly with Alakazam & Charizaro, Pokemon EX Delta Species Booster 5-pack ($20), 6" Pokemon Pocket Monster Musashi & Kojiro (Team Rocket) Figure 2-Pack, Pokemon Virtual Trainer Master Quest: #1, Virtual Trainer Basic Figure Pack: Winona with Pichu & Dragonite, Pokemon Yahtzee Jr. Game ($8), Pokemon Battle Dome, Junior Ready Bed ($20), the Pokemon - Action Figures - #04 Charmander and #54 Psyduck, and the Pikachu Pokemon Kids Rolling Backpack Luggage Bag (Color Blue). When I first looked into the Pokemon products, I read in several places that parents had complained about price gouging and that Pokemon apparel was overpriced. As I went through the best selling items on Amazon (not including the electronic video games), the pricing seemed pretty reasonable to me with many items about $5-$15. I must say that even if a video game costs $40 and your child gets hours of enjoyment from it, the cost of entertainment on an hourly basis is probably less than $.05.

Pokemon Video Games:

The Pokemon video games started in Japan as RPG's and were for the Game Boy system. Each series of role-playing games is considered a "generation" with 3 generations so far. It all started with the release of Pokemon Red and Blue and their remake called Pokemon Yellow. The 2nd generation of games had Pokemon Gold and Silver with characters like Chikorita or Celebi. This generation was completed by Pokemon Crystal. The third generation games had Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire both of which added 135 additional Pokemon with 76 new Pokemon abilities. The 3rd game in this series was Pokemon Emerald - available on the Game Boy Advance system. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. The 4th generation is due out soon and will have titles like Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl for the Nintendo DS system. Almost all the Pokemon games for consoles are about $20-$40 and they are available online through stores like Amazon.com or Toysnjoys.com/pokegames.html. Along with all the video games available are the various cheat codes for each Pokemon game. Kids go to cheat sites like Cheatcc.com or Gamespot.com to find out clues and cheats on how to play the games better and advance to different levels much faster with enhanced powers. Cheats to Emerald Pokemon are the most popular as well as Pokemon Ruby cheats. Pokemoncrater.com is another great website that offers the Pokemon Crater Battle Arena which is free to play once you sign up.

Pokemon Cards:

I was first introduced to Pokemon Trading cards back in the late 1990's by my nephews and didn't realize how big of an industry the Pokemon cards were. Each card represented characters that had strengths and weaknesses that were used to defeat their playing opponent. The cards still sell fairly well on Amazon or you can get the vintage Pokemon cards on sites like Ebay. Pokemon cards are like any other type of kids toys that eventually become collectibles if the interest is there. Pokemon-trading-cards.net/ is a great online Pokemon trading card site with discussion boards, deck building, Pokedex, and an area to buy/sell or trade Pokemon cards. Pokemontradingcards.net/ has Fossil cards, Base cards, Jungle, Rocket, Promos, Japanese, and Booster packs. They sell individual cards like Mew, Pikachu, Dragonite, Mewtwo, Scizor, Eevee, Moltres, Articuno, Dark Persian, Pokemon Tower, and Machamp. The cards are about $3-$5 with some going above $10. If you watch your local paper, you may even see a Pokemon trading card convention in your town.

Pokemon Online Website:

The official Pokemon website is located at Pokemon.com. The one area I found the most useful (at least for a beginner) was the Pokedex was a complete list of the Pokemon characters with names, descriptions, and how each rates for speed, attack, defense, HP, special attack and special defense. In the "funzone" section you can take an online quiz to test your knowledge of Pokemon, play 3 games, or get desktop wallpaper images on your computer for free. The wallpaper pictures are 1024 X 728 and work as great backgrounds on your desktop. Find out the latest movies or TV series, read about the newest DVD and video game releases in the news section, or shop online for Pokemon merchandise. They recently added a Pokemon mobile area which allows you to personalize your cell phone with Pokemon wallpapers and ringtones. If you go to Pokemon-games.com you will find information on all the latest game releases along with Pokemon Emerald Wallpapers Pokemon Pinball buddy icons, stickers, and wallpapers. Learn about the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game or Pokemon Dash.
