Star Trek has become a part of American pop culture through longevity and classic characters that have stood the test of time. I was lucky enough to grow up watching the reruns of the Original Series that lasted from 1966-1969 with William Shatner (Captain James T. Kirk), Leonard Nimoy (Spock) and George Takei (Sulu). The show was not nearly as successful as all the reruns and spin-offs that became of it. Star Trek spawned feature films, computer and video games, novels, toys, and culture references with words like "trekkies" or "trekdom". The Starship Enterprise was how Kirk and his fleetmates traveled around the galaxy meeting up with Klingons and other extra-terrestrial beings. The hand to hand combat performed by William Shatner is considered classic by todays terms and there are even Trekkie conventions or Star Trek shows where avid fans get together to discuss episodes, look at old memorabilia or do Spocks "V" sign with his fingers.
Star Trek: The Animated Series was next lasting from 1973-74 followed by Star Trek: Phase II (1978). With the success of Star Wars the movie, Star Trek The Motion Picture was released and did quite well. From 1987-1994 Star Trek: The Next Generation featured Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and it was the highest rated Star Trek series of all time. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ran from 1993-1999 and took place mainly on a space station. Star Trek: Voyager (1995-2001) lasted 7 seasons as had a women as the commanding officer. The last tv show in the series is Star Trek: Enterprise (2001-2005). This was a prequel to the original Star Trek series and the first episode takes place 10 years before the founding of the Federation. Any show that can last over 4 decades and support multiple themes and casts if truly remarkable. Star Trek was one of the best science fiction tv programs (if not the best) and I'm sure my kids will be talking about Captain Kirk and Spock. The 10 major motion films from the Star Trek series have all done well at the box office and the 11th (untitled) is due out in 2008. Unfortunately for many of the original cast members, Star Trek type cast these actors and actresses and many never went on to bigger careers except for William Shatner.
