Wicked Broadway Tickets - New York

One of the highlights of visiting New York, for many, is seeing a Broadway play or musical. We've all heard of the top Broadway shows - Cats, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera, Rent, The Producers, etc. But one of the biggest names in Broadway musicals in the last decade has been the hit Wicked. The musical Wicked comes from a story of the same name written by author Gregory Maguire. In brief, it tells the backstory to the famous book and movie, The Wizard of Oz. We learn about the intrigue and personalities that were in Oz before Dorothy arrives - mostly, who is that green wicked witch, and why is she wicked? The focus of the story is the relationship between the young Elphaba (the future "Wicked Witch") and Galinda (the future Glinda, Good Witch of the North), how they meet and move from being rivals to friends. While the show has received only average reviews from the press and critics, most fans love it - it ranks among our top 10 favorites. There is a touring company that brings the show to cities across North America - if you get the chance, check it out in your home town. But if you find yourself in New York City on vacation, consider catching it where it all started, right on Broadway.

Wicked Musical in New York - The Gershwin Theater

Most of us don't know too much about financing these stage shows, how much they cost, how much they earn. But if you find the winning combination of a popular show that plays on for years and years at multiple venues, you can make some serious cash. What kind of money, you say? The Broadway show alone takes in more than $1M per week, bringing in a record of more than $1.8M in the week around Christmas last year. Wicked also runs in London, Chicago, and Los Angeles, and a touring company hits other cities around the US each month. With these additional shows, Wicked often brings in $7-$10M each week in ticket sales. Wicked opened up in New York on October 30, 2003, and has been playing at the Gershwin Theatre (222 West 51st St, between Broadway and 8th Ave) every night ever since (actually two shows on Saturday, Monday night is dark). GershwinTheatre.com is their website. You can see a seating chart for Wicked here. In general, the best seats for Wicked are towards the front of the front mezzanine section (center) or the A-K rows in the orchestra (center). NOTE: it may be tempting to get tickets in those very front rows (AA, BB, etc.) but many times you are so low and slightly below the stage that you can see everything the way it is meant to be seen. The official site for buying tickets for Wicked is TicketMaster. How much are tickets for Wicked in New York? Orchestra tickets (lower level) run $70-$300, Front Mezzanine tickets cost $125-$300, Mid-Mezzanine tickets cost $90, and Rear Mezzanine tickets cost $65. Where else can I get Wicked tickets? Ebay owns a company called StubHub.com that resells tickets, but we rarely see really great deals there - for a popular show like Wicked, tickets usually sell pretty close to full price.

TicketsNow.com is another site for finding tickets from secondary sources (say if the box office or TicketMaster doesn't have any tickets - they are actually owned by TicketMaster!). Basically they act as a broker buying and selling tickets, guaranteeing the tickets authenticity. For a random Wicked date we found tickets ranging from $120 to $455. You can even resell any tickets you have here as well if you can't use them (they charge a 15% sales commission). If you are in New York and looking to buy tickets for a show that same day, you can try the TKTS booth in Times Square -- you will have to wait in line for quite a while, you will have to pay cash, and you will have to take whatever is available for just that day. Tickets are usually 25-50% off normal price (this is where theaters get rid of tickets they haven't sold yet - even half the price is better than an empty seat). The digital sign above the booths will tell you what shows are available - don't waste your time in line only to find out there are no Wicked tickets when you get to the front. As a general rule, Wicked still sells out so regularly that you are unlikely to see any tickets at TKTS.

Wicked Musical On Tour - Tickets for Touring Wicked Show - Where is Wicked Playing?

With the success of Wicked in New York, they decided to bring the show to the rest of the world. A year and a half after opening on Broadway, another troupe launched the show in Toronto. It has moved through many cities since then. In Chicago, it has been such a hit that it remains in production indefinitely. Same is true in London and Los Angeles, where Wicked began production in early 2007 (the LA show is supposed to end its run in 2009, but who knows..) Melbourne became the latest permanent show opening in 2008. The North American tour continues as well, going into a second run starting in 2009. Where can you see Wicked outside of LA, Chicago, London, and New York? Here is the schedule for the Wicked touring show for 2008 and 2009:
