The holiday season is usually a mad dash at the last minute to ship gifts overnight to friends and family and the shipping companies around the world truly take advantage of us organized fold during those times. Who wants to have to pay $20 to send a $15 gift overnight just so it gets there by Christmas. Well, at least you have a choice when it comes to shipping services. UPS, or Brown, as they have marketed themselves as lately, is the largest package delivery company on the planet. With major hubs all over the world to help distribute business and personal packages each and every day UPS does make it easy. There are drop boxes on street corners, customer service centers and they recently bought Mailboxes Etc (now the UPS Store) to give you more convenient locations to ship packages. Their main competition comes from FedEx, who by the way bought Kinkos as an answer to the UPS purchase of Mailboxes etc. FedEx offers express, ground, freight, and supply chain services. Both UPS.com and Fedex.com allow you to track shipments online 24/7 and you can also order shipping supplies.
DHL and Airborne are 2nd tier shipping companies with services that match UPS or Fedex in many areas, but not all. DHL is a global leader in supply chain management and distribution. They are a leading business to business shipping service company and have held their edge even with the huge marketing budgets of UPS and FedEx bearing down on them. Airborne Express was recently bought by DHL and now operates under the DHL brand. Airborne express is a low-cost delivery service offering US and international express and freight services. Lastly, the United States postal service does deliver the bulk of mail in America, but they don't do the package volume that the big carriers do. The US Post Office offers some great shipping rates on standard mail delivery and if you are organized then we suggest using the mailman to have your letters and packages delivered instead of the UPS guy. All websites offer shipping labels, stamps, product shipping information on costs and freight shipping.
Freight and Container Shipping:
Freight shipping and container shipping is a little more complicated than just dropping it off at the local UPS or FedEx pickup stop. Freight can weigh thousands of pounds and shipping huge containers is a niche business for many interstate shipping companies. There are several online shipping service companies that help you find the best freight shipping price through online forms that deliver rate quotes. The 2 we found most reliabel and convenient were Freightquote.com and Freight101.com with shipping vehicles that deliver to all 50 states. Using trucks to ship freight and cargo is huge business, just think of all the trucks you see on the road each day (they all have something inside they are transporting).
Where can I get shipping labels?
Need shipping labels for your packages, go no further than Planetlabel.com with their extensive line of inkjet labels, laser labels, thermal labels, and non-adhesive products. If you need specific United States Postal Service labels then head to the official site at USPS.com and print shipping labels right from your computer. Same things goes for UPS, DHL, and FedEx - print labels through their special software which allows for online payment.
Free Shipping Online:
How can so many online retailers (namely Amazon) give you free shipping? Well, perhaps shipping and handling is not as expensive as companies have always made it out to be. We always assume the cost of the product is where a company turns a profit, but shipping bills can add way more to their bottom line. Amazon can give free shipping on many products since they aren't shipping things overnight. You get free shipping on 6-9/day standard mail delivery (very inexpensive). More and more internet sites are offering free shipping as marketing tools to get customers to buy from them. Eventually all purchases shipped standard mail will probably be offered with free shipping online. As long as you don't mind waiting an extra day or 2 to receive your package, go with free shipping.
International Shipping:
International shipping is still quite expensive since you do have to fly the packages long distance and fuel cost money. We did a sample interntional shipping on UPS for a 20 lb package in our packaging that was to go from San Francisco to Shanghai in 2 days. The cost worked out to $220. DHL is a great global shipping company and we recommend getting a quote from them when you are looking to ship packages internationally.
