Today it seems that everyone has a tattoo, unfortunately a lot of the work being done is not very good and some customers are stuck with a cheap tattoo forever (unless they decide to pay for the laser removal treatment). A lot of people design custom tattoos with the help of their artist, but there are still the standard tattoos that people love (like a dragon, rose, star, cross, scorpion, tiger, bird, koi fish, and all kinds of traditional japanese and chinese art like kanji lettering). Tattooing has been around since the mid 1700's and became quite popular in the 1900's when sailors started to get inked while they were out at sea. Everyone has seen a picture of a sailor with a tattoo of an anchor or a heart that says "mom" on it. Nowadays you see people that have tattoos on their face (which we don't recommend), back, neck, ankles, arm, even their wrists and chests. A study in 2003 showed that 16 % of Americans have at least 1 tattoo, while about 10 % have been tattooed 2 times or more. Tattoos are also an easy way to find out about a person and their history just by looking at the design itself.
Most tattoos of eagles and USMC lettering are from people in the military, while black and grey tattoos are most common in tattoos done in prison. This is not always the case as some people get tattoos for weird personal reasons. Tattoos have become very trendy with celebrities like Tommy Lee and Angelina Jolie, but they also can afford to have them done. Getting tattooed can be very expensive as some people have spent over $20,000 getting work done. A small tattoo that only takes 1 hour will cost you about $100 no matter what tattoo parlor you go to. A website on the history of tattoos and their meaning is at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tattoo. After getting a tattoo the artist will usually give you an instruction sheet on how to care for it (what type of cream to apply, how to wash it, etc.).
How to Pick a Tattoo Design:
Do you want to get tattooed? Are you trying to pick a cool tattoo design? Well before you decide on the spot for your new tattoo just remember that tattoos are permanent so you better choose wisely. Most women prefer designs like a pretty flower or fairy tattoo, and men usually go with stuff like a dragon, lion, skull, or barb wire somewhere on their body. If you want to make a custom design for a tattoo your best bet is to talk with your tattoo artist and see if they can sketch something out for you. Most tattoo artists are willing to draw a unique design if that is what you want, although that process will usually cost you a little more money. In Las Vegas for example, a custom tattoo that takes 3 hours will cost the client about $300 (without a tip) so by the time you leave the shop you will have spent about $350. I have many tattoos on my body (my arms are sleeved as they say) and I truly enjoy looking at them and thinking about where I was in my life at the time I got them done. It is important to know that a lot of employers and jobs will not allow any visible tattoos, so you are better off to get your tattoo done in a private place (like your hip, back, chest, etc.) if you are worried about your career. As far as the tattoo itself you should consider the placement and size of your design before you get stuck with the needle. Some drawings look good on paper and seem to fit, but once the stencil is transferred to your skin it can take on a whole new look and it's not always a good one. The safest thing to do is consult your tattoo artist before they pull out their equipment (tattoo gun, ink, etc.), as typically the artist will be able to help you place your tattoo in a safe, sensible spot.
Temporary - Henna Tattoos:
Temporary tattoos are very popular (especially among kids under 18) and are a safe way for someone to get involved with the art before committing to a lifetime of being inked. They are generally applied to the skin using water to temporarily transfer the design to the surface of the skin. Temporary tattoos are waterproof, but can be removed with oil-based creams, and are intended to last only a few days while you show them to your friends and family. Airbrush tattoos are another popular form of temporary tattoos. The process involves using a stencil design and spraying paint through the stencil onto the skin which usually lasts about one week. Henna tattoos, also known as Mehndi, and the marks made by the stains of silver nitrate on the skin when exposed to ultraviolet light. Both methods, silver nitrate and henna, take up to two weeks to fade from the skin.
Finding a Tattoo Shop:
Are you trying to find a good tattoo shop in your hometown? If you live in Los Angeles, New York, or Miami then it is relatively easy to find a good tattoo shop (one that is clean, affordable, and has good artists). On the other hand if you live in a small town like Phoenix it can be quite tricky to find a good local artist to help tattoo you (or ink you). Local.com is a good website that can guide you to the nearest tattoo shop in your hometown, sometimes they even provide reviews for you to check out. If you do get tattooed in Los Angeles I would recommend you to to Studio City Tattoo (located north of Hollywood) and ask for Nina. If you are looking to get a tattoo in Las Vegas I would check out Pricz Tattoo at 6985 W. Sahara Blvd.
