Coloring Your Hair At Home:

We've all been there , your hair is growing out it's color, you need to get into your hair stylist to make an appointment but you just don't have the time or they can't fit you in to their schedule soon enough. Well, that's what happened to me and I decided to take matters into my own hands by going online to the LOREAL PARIS website, LorealParisUSA.com, where I found lots of information about coloring your own hair at home. I have had copper streaks growing out that I didn't like and have been wanting to cover up with a shade close to my natural color, and I didn't want to go to the time, money, and hassle of a long beauty shop appointment, so instead I went to the LOREAL website, which was actually pretty easy to use. They have sections on Skincare, Cosmetics, Styling -- I clicked the Haircolor tab and then I chose "pick my shade".

I followed all the steps and answered the questions (maybe 10) along with listening to the Color Experts' Tips and voila! Loreal recommended hair colors (from the Superior Preference line) based on the information I typed in. I ran down to my local drugstore to buy my new hair-color-to-be. Minutes later I was at home starting the process. The color I used actually put my hair back to it's natural color of dark brown and the brassy, copper color was gone, gone, gone! I thought that was a pretty good deal to color my own hair for a little less than $15 per color (I got two), at a time that was convenient to me, without having to make an appointment, or try to tell my hairdresser what color I wanted. This product comes with everything you need including gloves, clear instructions, recommended pre-coloring tests, a special conditioner (six weeks worth) and obviously the color mixtures needed. The recommended pre-coloring tests were a bit of a pain because they tell you to do a skin patch test first and make you wait 48 hours to make sure you don't develop any allergies. It's a good suggestion, just hard to wait when you are ready to color! The other suggestion which I found very helpful and smart, was to mix the color and test the color on a strand of hair to make sure it's the color I wanted. I actually mixed two colors, which cost about $30 (3/4 of one color and 1/4 of another into the same bottle) to get the shade I wanted and still spent at least $100 less than I would of at the hairdressers.

Changing or Fixing Your Hair Color

Drawbacks: The whole process is a little messy, so have lots of towels around. A large towel or two on the floor where you are doing the color, one around neck to catch any drips and wear old clothes that you don't care if they get stained. Just be conscientious of your work area and check the walls, shower walls and sinks, etc. when you are cleaning up after yourself -- don't do the dog-thing where you shake your hair around real fast, you won't like the results on the wall and mirror! I did find it was easy to remove (right away) from surfaces like the sink, shower and floor, however, you don't want to get this on cabinets and surfaces that have paint.

In general, I was very pleased with the website, the product and in roaming through the LOREAL PARIS site I also found great shine and conditioning products which help you to maintain your new color and keep your hair looking shiny and healthy. Also I saw some great styling tips for all kinds of hair types, how to manage different textures of hair and what product works with what type of hair as well. My hair feels well conditioned, soft and shiny and I would recommend trying this to anyone who is looking for an uncomplicated way to color their hair!
