A wedding is a once in a lifetime experience (hopefully!) for most people. For women, choosing the perfect wedding dress is both a stressful and ultimately very rewarding experience. How much to spend on a wedding dress? Designer wedding gowns can be VERY expensive, and of course the bride will only wear it once, but most people plan on spending from $300-$1000 when buying a wedding dress, with $500-$600 being the average. Some of the more popular designers of wedding gowns and bridal gowns are: Alvina Valenti, Henry Roth, Demetrios, Lazaro, Anne Barge, Blumarine, Vera Wang, Ines Di Santo, Reem Acra, Romona Keveza, Cymbeline Paris, Mon Cheri, After Dark, After Six, Sincerity, Scala, Rose Taft, Venus, and Victorias Bridal. Of course there are many more, but that helps get you familiar with some of the names. Below find information on more wedding dress pictures, wedding dress patterns, and the best shopping sites for bridal gowns.
Choosing a wedding dress
A variety of factors come into play when selecting a bridal gown. Sometimes is it a maternity wedding dress, sometimes a vintage bridal gown, sometimes a unique dress, sometimes a traditional wedding gown. Whatever you choose, the wedding dress is usually the center piece of any wedding, and usually the most remembered part of the wedding event (by the time the reception ends and the champagne stops flowing, a lot of guests don't remember the last few hours!). In selecting a designer wedding dress, these are usually the choices you need to make:
Choose a Neckline (halter, high, off shoulder, spaghetti straps, scoop, sheer, etc.)
Choose a price range (ouch!)
Wedding and Bridal Gown pictures and photos
The first step usually involved browsing some bridal magazines or bridal websites. For magazine, hit your local bookstore or newsstand and pick up Modern Bride, Brides, Bridal Guide, Elegant Bride, or Wedding Dresses. You'll usually find several. These are filled mostly with ads, but also with a plethora of pictures of wedding dresses, allowing you to clip and compile a file of styles and designers you like. When it comes to websites, you can customize your search to view only specific bridal gown styles or makers. Try TheKnot.com as a place to start. You need to sign-in and set up a an account to browse, but it makes it easier to save your favorites and resume your research on future visits. They have wedding gown pictures on display from over 100 designers. And they offer a helpful section on wedding dress advice. They feature articles like: Your Gown - Neckline Glossary, Finding the right fit for you, Choosing the right white, Where to Shop, Gown-buying checklist, Preserving your wedding dress, and more. Keep notes, print out pictures, and add to your wedding file. Take your file with you when you visit a bridal shop.
Shopping for a wedding dress or bridal gown
There are a number of place where you can actually find, get fitted, and buy a wedding dress. Start with independently owned bridal shops. They generally carry a large variety of dresses in a variety of price ranges, offering complete fittings, and all wedding accessories as well. Couture shops are more high end and carry only specific designer dresses, with less selection and variety. Department stores like Saks sell wedding dresses, allowing you to browse inventory across stores, and of course offering full fitting/alteration options. There are also national chains, like David's Bridal, that make and import their own dress designs, offering good prices but generally less selection as well. Another option is to have a custom wedding gown made. You can find bridal dress patterns and designs that a seamstress can turn into your very own dress made from scratch. You pay more for the hand-made creation like this, but you end up with a one of a kind wedding dress that has never seen a factory or a store rack.
Finding a wedding gown online
Obviously, no one would buy their wedding gown on the internet without first trying it on, but you can use some online bridal sites to help you prepare for your shopping experience.
Davids Bridal is the largest bridal retailer in the US, and they have nearly 300 stores around the country. All dresses must be ordered at stores, but their website, DavidsBridal.com, allows you to browse before going in for an appointment. They also offer a collection of plus size wedding gowns and bridal dresses for those women who don't have model stick figures, with size ranging from 14W to 26W. The BridalOnlineStore.com also has a selection you can browse online, with prices. They have wholesale priced wedding dresses starting at $299 and going up towards $1000. HouseOfBrides.com features more than 20,000 bridal products. Starting in Chicago in 1929, they moved online a few years ago, bringing low prices and a great selection of bridal gowns. For example, you can select from a wide variety of Victorias Bridal line for just $450-$700. Or Mon Cheri gowns from $450- $1500.
