What is a No Load Mutual Fund?:
One thing that many people don't understand is that many mutual funds have fees that are associated with them. You will find fees like management fees, account fees, exchange fees, redemption fees, and sales loads. As an investor you should try to stay away from those funds are heavily bogged down with fees that can really take away from your profits over a 25-30 year period. A No Load fund is a fund that typically can be purchased without commission. Brokers will usually have the right to charge a commission on the purchase similar to a front load fund. No Load funds can be charged a redemption fee at the discretion of the broker. Most studies show that loads don't outperform no-loads, so there is never any reason to pay loads on mutual funds. Morningstar and MSN Moneycentral have some great charts and listings of top performing "no load" mutual funds which should get you started in the right direction. Another similar type of investment are the EFT's that are very popular on Wall Street and around the world. If you go to our "Finance" section you will see a few articles on ETF's (Exchange Traded Funds).
Where can I sign up for a Vanguard Mutual Fund?:
Vanguard is perhaps the most recognized name in mutual funds and dozens of their current funds have a 5 Star rating from Morningstar. Many of their mutual funds are so heavily invested that they have closed them to new people. Vanguard offers more than 100 mutual fund portfolios (no sales commissions on any of them). Go to their site to get started and they will walk you through some simple questions and answers to see what is the best fit for your investment strategies. You can find them online at Vanguard.com.
Fidelity vs Oppenheimer Mutual Funds:
Each year these 2 investment giants compete for your money. Fidelity has 11 funds rates in the "Best buy List" with Forbes and many 5-Star rated mutual funds by Morningstar. Oppenheimer mutual funds have always been top performers and they too have many funds rated highly with Morningstar and Kiplingers. From our own experience we have succeeded using both funds, but we prefer Fidelity for overall quality.
