Back Massage - Lower Back Pain

In todays stressful, hectic world, back pain and neck pain are common. Whether from injuries or just too much time hunched over your computer at the office or home, millions of Americans suffer from back pain. Many turn to chiropractors to help alleviate pain. Others turn to professional masseuse services to help work out the kinks. But these options cost a lot of ongoing money, and many people can't afford the non-stop bills. Another option is to invest in some personal, home massage tools, equipment, or machines. These can range from small handheld vibrators or massagers to massage chairs to massage mats to hot tubs or other water spa treatments. In this article, we will take a look at some of the best options for back care and relieving back pain and neck pain and stress.

Spa Therapy for Back Pain

Good circulation is one way to help with back pain. Excercise, massage, and spa therapy are various ways to increase and improve bloodflow to your back. For many people, soaking in a hot tub or spa is a great way to relieve back tension and pain. The pulsing waters of the tub act like a massage, invigorating your back and loosening up tight muscles. You can use a jacuzzi jetted bathtub (which are increasingly common in homes) or the traditional outdoor hot tub spa for this treatment. You can buy an outdoor hot tub at places like Costco or Home Deport for less than $5000 - plan on spending another couple hundred dollars to have it delivered and installed. Fifteen to thirty minutes per day brings a lot of people ongoing relief from their aches and pains. Some of the leading hot tub spa manufacturers are HotSprings, Sundance Spas, and CalSpas.

Handheld Back Massagers - Back Massage Mats

Back massage aided by electronic or battery powered equipment is another option. Homedics (Homedics.com) is a big name in massage equipment. They make a variety of back massage cushions that you place in a chair, plug in, and sit back and relax. These include models like the Homedics BXP-200, BXP-100, MMP-100, and BK-2000. The Back Energizer 5 Point Back Massager with Heat works in the car or at home or office. Place it on the seat, plug into either a 12V car adaptor or a normal AC home plug, and the heat and 5 point massage will go to work. The BKP-200 works on both your thighs and back with 10 motors and customizable controls to focus on your upper, middle, or lower back. Pricing is less than $40 for this back massager. For a more advanced back massage, check out the Homedics Therapist Select Shiatsu Back Massager SBM-200. Priced at around $100, this seat style massager features two kneading heads that move up and down your spine, as they spin. Moving up yet another level is the Quad Roller Massaging Cushion QRM-400, priced at $150. Four independent rollers can do 6 different styles of shiatsu or rolling massage. Homedics also makes a variety of handheld massagers, including percussion massagers that have a karate chop style thumping action. Most of these range from $35-$80, like the Therapist Select Compact Percussion Action Massager with Heat or the Therapist Select Percussion Massager with Polished Aluminum Cover & Heat. A lot of people prefer the chair pad type back massagers since they can just sit back and relax without having to hold or move a handheld massager, and no other person is required to help. Others prefer the targetted placement they can get with a handheld unit, even sometimes propping it against a chair and leaning against it to get it right at the right spot.

Another popular maker of back massagers is Healiohealth. Their Jeanie Rub Massager is meant for professional therapists - it looks almost like a big power sander, except it massages instead of sanding! Cost is $210. Thumper Massage makes the popular Thumper Mini Pro Massager and Thumper Versapro Massager. The Thumper Versapro is designed for lower body massage, the lower back and legs. It has 13 different massage settings for your feet, calves, thighs, and lower back. It uses pulses acu-pressure motion rather than plain vibration ($300). The Thumper Mini Pro Back Massager also uses percussive action to gently "pound" your back, not just vibrate it. You can use it on thick or thinly muscled areas due to its various settings. Cost is $200. HealioHealth also makes 2 hydrotherapy deluxe water spa jets for use in a regular soaking bathtub (about $130-$150). If you are ready to buy online, we recommend shopping with Amazon -- they are the most trusted online retailer, with great selection, service, and prices -- we've been doing business with them for more than 10 years. Where can I find the best back massagers?

Check out ComfortChannel.com for a full selection of massage therapy products. You can browse by massager type (percussion back massagers, shiatsu, hand held massage tools, personal massage vibrators, thermal bath spas, massage mats and pillows, foot massagers, etc.), by brand (Jeanie Rub, Maxi Rub, Thumper, Massagenius, Obus Forme, Sirius, Conair), or by price. The Sirius massage pillows are great product for reducing neck tension. Shaped like a padded cylinder, you simply rest your head against them in the tub or in a chair or bed and let the 2 D batteries in this cordless pillow bring you peace (about $25). A cheaper version of percussion massager is the Conair THP2 Back and Neck Massager at just $36. "Penetrating percussion massage & infrared heat for deep muscle massage therapy. The THP2 Conair Body Benefits Heated Percussion Massager is lightweight with an ergonomically designed foam cushioned handle, and an extra long cord ensures an easy grip and increased maneuverability. The innovative percussion action head directs massage therapy waves downward for deep muscle relief while variable speeds provide the choice of gentle or invigorating massage intensities." The infrared heats soothes and loosens back muscles, making the percussion massage that much more deeply relaxing.
