Getting Breast Implants - Breast Augmentation

In a society obsessed with looking young and healthy, plastic surgery has become commonplace, fixing Mother Nature's shortcomings (or at least what WE think are shortcomings). Nose jobs, face lifts, liposuction, boob jobs, tummy tucks, hair transplants. You name it, people are having it done every day. Self improvements is on everyone's mind, and for women, one of the most common procedures to have done is breast augmentation surgery, also known as breast enlargements, breast implants, or "boob job". For many women, the idea of transforming their body is very appealing, whether it means just filling out their clothing better and looking better, or enhancing their appearance after several children and the wear and tear that places on the body. We discuss the various options related to breast implant surgery below.

Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation procedures can enlarge the breasts, reshape breasts, or balance breasts of different size (on a similar note, there is also breast reduction surgery for women who want a smaller bust). Breast augmentation is also common in reshaping breasts after breast cancer. The type of breast implants used are sacs made of silicone filled with either a saline solution (salt water) or silicone gel. The implant is then surgically placed under your chest tissue. Saline solution is similar to the natural elements that make up your body tissue, while there have been some controversies surrounding silicone implants. Be sure to discuss implant types with your doctor. After selecting the type of implant, you must select the size. You will need to consider not only your wished-for size, but also your body frame and amount of natural breast tissue available to stretch around the implant. Implants that are too large have the "balloon" look, with the skin very taut around them, looking very artificial and not blending well with the rest of your upper body. Another choice to make is placement of the implants. A subglandular placement is between the chest muscle and the breast tissue, while a submuscular placement is is below the chest muscle (one layer deeper). The submuscular positioning often takes longer and results in more pain post-op, but it makes the implants less obvious to the touch and makes mammograms easier. Again, consult with your doctor on your choices here to determine what is best for your particular case and needs.

Most breast implant procedures take one to two hours and are done on an outpatient basis - meaning you do NOT stay overnight after the procedure. Under general anesthesia, the doctor will make an incision and insert the breast implant, then close the incision. To minimize the size of the incision, the implant is often inserted empty and then filled in place. There are 3 common incision sites - under the arm (axillary), under the breast fold (inframammary), and around the nipple (periareolar). Another option is umbilical (through the belly button), but this is not as common. In all cases there will be some visible scarring which can be minimized by a skillful surgeon. After surgery, most women report significant pain and discomfort for the first few days, and exercise is often avoided for several weeks to allow proper healing. Always follow your doctors instructions.

Finding a Breast Augmentation Surgeon / Doctor

ImplantInfo.com offers a list of suggested plastic surgeons for breast implant surgery, broken down by state and city. Also valuable is their patient consultation form which provides you with a list of questions to ask during your breast surgery consultation. Things like: Which implant/model/size is best for me? What incision type do you recommend? Should my implants be under or over the muscle? Will I be able to breastfeed? What risks or complications should I be aware of? Another good source is to ask friends who have had breast implants for a recommendation - were they happy with their doctor? were they pleased with the results? If their doctor did a good job, that is a good starting place. You can also get a list of local doctors from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. After finding a few doctors, you will want to set up a consultation appointment, where you will discuss your wants and needs and find out more about your doctor - this is the time to discuss options, look at before and after pictures, talk about the doctors experience level, learn about potential complications and problems, and more. Do your homework prior to this meeting so you are prepared.

Breast Implant Photos - Before and After Pictures of Breast Augmentation Surgery

A number of plastic surgery sites offer before and after pictures of breast implants to give you an idea of what you can expect, and what the various size implants look like on a real human body (most people can't visualize what a saline or silicon gel balloon will look like once implanted). Mentor4Me.com has more than 100 before and after breast implant patient photos. Clicking on each photo brings up the doctor who performed the breast implant, along with the specifications of the size of implant used, placement, and incision type. ImplantInfo.com is another site designed for women that has hundreds of before and after images from both plastic surgeons and sent it by users of the site. A number of these show post-op pictures as well so you can get an idea what incisions and scarring look like.

How much are breast implants? How much do breast implants cost?

The cost of breast augmentation surgery varies state by state, city by city, and by the quality and reputation of your surgeon. Average prices are in the range of $4000 - $10,000, which covers the entire opertation, from surgery, to operating room costs, to anesthesia. Breast implants are NOT covered by normal health insurance, so this is a big out of pocket expense for many women.
