High Cholesterol and Crestor

One of the most common medical issues associated with aging in this country is high cholesterol. Cholesterol is a substance produced naturally by the liver and found in many fatty foods. What is cholesterol? Cholesterol is a fat-like substance used for building cell membranes -- you find it pretty much everywhere in your bodies cells and in your blood. For most people, 70% or more of the cholesterol in their system comes directly from the liver, while the rest comes from the food you eat. There are 2 types of cholesterol: LDL cholesterol which is what we call "bad cholesterol" (LD and HD stand for low density and high density, respectively, the last "L" stands for lipoproteins), and HDL cholesterol, which is what we call "good cholesterol". If you get your cholesterol tested, you will get numbers for both of these readings -- a total cholesterol reading of less than 200 is considered good, while over 240 is considered high risk. For men, your HDL count should be 40 or above, with 60 being considered very good; for women, 50 or above is OK (HDL is the good stuff, higher number is better). For LDL (the bad stuff), a reading of 100 or less is considered best, and anything over 160 is considered high.

Why worry about cholesterol? Too much bad cholesterol and not enough good can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and hardening of arteries. The LDL cholesterol starts to adhere to and build up along your artery walls, impeding blood flow and putting added strain on your circulatory system. So you need to know about your genetic propensity for cholesterol (which you can't control by dieting) and you need to watch your diet and avoid foods high in fat and cholesterol like red meats, oils, and dairy products. The American Heart Association website, AmericanHeart.org, has plenty of helpful information regarding heart health and cholesterol guidelines -- take a few minutes to check it out.

Fighting High Cholesterol with Statins - Crestor is a Statin Drug

When it comes to fighting high cholesterol (the bad kind, LDL), there are a few steps you can take to improve your numbers. The first step is diet - food coming from animals has cholesterol in it -- eggs, dairy, cheese, meat, butter, ice cream, etc. -- as does foods containing trans fats and saturated fats. So limit those food and concentrate on eating a lot of fiber -- whole grain breads and cereals, vegetables, fruits. Regular exercise, 30 minutes or more per day, is also important for maintaining heart health. This can include walking, playing sports, jogging, aerobics, climbing stairs. And finally, don't smoke. Normally your doctor will recommend you start with these steps before getting into cholesterol medications and drugs. The main drugs used in lowering LDL cholesterol levels are called statins. Statins work by increasing the amount of LDL the liver removes from the bloodstream resulting in a lower LDL count, while at the same time increasing the good HDL cholesterol count. And they can work quickly, with positive results in just weeks. Some of the most popular statin drugs include Lipitor, Zocor, Pravachol, and Crestor. Crestor (also known by the generic name rosuvastatin calcium) is made by the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. It is a pill that is normally taken once a day, at a dosage level selected by your doctor, 10mg being a common dosage, but also available in 5mg, 20mg, and 40mg. Crestor has been available in the US since 2003 and comes only by doctor prescription. You should not drink alcohol while taking Crestor, and you should maintain the low-fat diet prescribed by your physician. Can I buy Crestor online? There are some reputable online prescription drug pharmacies, but you will need a valid doctors prescription that you will have to fax to them prior to shipment. How much does Crestor cost? All Crestor pills cost the same, whether 5mg or 40 mg. Expect to pay about $2 per pill from an online pharmacy.

The official Crestor website is Crestor.com, where you can find more information on how the drug works, the kind of questions you should ask your doctor when getting a cholesterol test, free 15 day trial offers, and more. Keep in mind much of this is marketing information coming from the drug maker themselves, so be sure to get proper medical advice from your doctor before considering any course of action related to cholesterol care.

Crestor Side Effects

Some of the most severe side effects of Crestor and all statin medication is myopathy, or muscle illness and breakdown, which can lead to kidney failure. That is why you have to contact your doctor if you have any symptoms like muscle tenderness or weakness, other flu-like symptoms, chest pains, or swelling in hands and feet. Statins are also not to be used during pregnancy. More common side effects of Crestor include nausea, stomach pain, constipation, headache, sore throat, and discomfort while urinating, and these should also be discussed with your doctor.
