Ear Wax:

Ear wax is not necessarily the best thing to bring up at the dinner table, but everyone has it. The unfortunate thing is that some of us have more of it and it often gets stuck in our ears causing hearing problems and equilibrium issues. As a kid my mom used to remove the ear wax from my ears with a cue tip and boy did I have a lot. Doctors now say it's not a good idea to remove the wax as it should slowly work itself out on its own. Shoving a cue tip into your ear is not only dangerous but most doctors say you are only jamming the ear wax further into your ear and packing it in. As I grew older I noticed my hearing would start going out about every year or so and at first I didn't know what was causing it. It usually occured after swimming in a pool or being submerged under water. I just thought it was remnant water that wasn't coming out and causing my ear to be clogged. When I went to my doctor to have it looked at, they said it was ear wax that was getting lodged in my ear and the water just moved it around a bit and made the hearing worse. Simple solution to have it removed, but something that I have to get done once a year or so.

Ear wax is actually beneficial to your ears, much like nose hairs are to your nose. Wax in the ears works not only as a lubricant but also as a cleaner. Another reason ear wax is useful is because it stops dirt, debris, and even small bugs from getting into your inner ear. It protects the ear canal and ear drum from potential damage. For most people the ear wax makes its way out of the ear and you never really see or deal with it. I have noticed sometimes that excess ear wax will drop out while I'm sleeping on a pillow. Other times it will simply dry up on the outside of your ear and remain until you take a shower and wash it off or remove it with a cue tip. The vast majority of people never have to deal with ear wax removal since their ears do a good job of producing just the right amount. While others need to control the amount of ear wax in their ears with drops of baby oil or other similar solutions which help soften the ear wax that gets lodged in the ear and helps it to slowly get removed. Some people who have issues with ear wax say that wearing ear plugs while swimming or having their head submerged in the water helps them stay away from ear blockage and hearing problems.

Having a doctor remove the ear wax:

If you have a persistent amount of ear wax that builds up inside your ears, the odds are you will have to make a yearly visit to your doctors office to have it removed properly. We will discuss other methods of controlling it down below, but for now we focus on the procedures that doctors do to get it out and what it will cost you. Firstly, a regular doctors visit is all it takes to have the wax removed - about $75-$85 (hopefully you have a co-pay of $20 or less). There are several ways a nurse or doctor can remove the excess wax buildup. The easiest way is to have them insert a simple pick like instrument (curette) wherein they are able to grab the ear wax and remove it within minutes. If the buildup of wax is heavier, you may be looking at another option. Sometimes a warmer liquid is inserted into your ear while you lay down on one side and it allows the warm fluid to break down the wax and dislodge it from your ear. Then the nurse will rinse your ear with a syringe and wash the clump of wax right out. I have also had a nurse use a syringe full of a special solution and they shoot it into your ear trying to get the wax to come loose and escape out your ear. It's always a strange feeling having liquid shot into your ear, but I can honestly say the payoff is worth it once the glob of ear wax is finally removed. Takes about 10 minutes at most for both ears and then my hearing is back to normal and I wait another year for a return visit. No pain during or after the procedure, just relief.

Home Treatments - Remedies for Earwax:

One of the keys to keeping your ear wax from building up and potentially getting impacted is to use an ear wax softener like baby oil, mineral oil, or even store bought products. Some people place just a few drops of these solutions into their ears to help excessive buildup and keep their ears in good working order. Cue tips are good for cleaning ears and getting some of the wax that has drifted to the outer protion of your ear. Experts agree that sticking a cue tip inside your ear is not recommended and most likely will only worsen your situation if you suffer from ear wax blockage. I have had some success with using a basic syringe filled with warm water and slowly loosening up the wax blockage until it comes out. The process can take several days with repeated attempts, but it can work.

Best Ear Wax Removal Products:

My doctor has recommended a few commerical ear wax removal products like Murine, Debrox, Mack's Wax Away TM and Physicians ChoiceTM. The Debrox Earwax Removal Kit sells for a little over $8 on Drugstore.com Debrox is meant for those 12 and older and works pretty well within a few uses. Many of the reviews we read on Drugstore.com are very positive after just 1 or 2 uses. The Murine Ear Wax Removal System ($10) is another popular choice amongst consumers when it comes to unwanted ear wax. Murine comes with ear drops and a bulb syringe. You put 5 to 10 drops into each ear and let them sit for a few minutes. This is the product that I have been using for years and it does seem to keep me out of the doctors office more often than before. I use the drops every week or so and then flush out excess wax using the syringe. Wally's Natural Products All-Natural Ear Candle ($6.00) is made with beeswax and the feedback is good with these, although many of the user comments make note that you need a 2nd person to help you with the application process. All these over the counter ear wax removal systems should keep you from having to visit the doctor so often for an ear irrigation.
