Best Fat Burning Workouts

When it comes to burning fat, there is one equation you must master - your body must burn more calories than it takes in. If through normal daily metabolism and exercise you burn 2800 calories while you consume 1800 calories in the food and drink you ingest, you net weight loss will be 1000 calories. When you lose weight, it comes from a variety of stored energy sources within your body, which can include both muscle and fat, which is why a good muscle toning or muscle building program helps you target fat loss. Having a healthy diet is also an important part in burning fat and losing weight - eating the right mix of grains, fiber, fruits and vegetables does a lot more for you than eating fatty foods.

Putting yourself on a starvation diet can fool your body and make it even harder to lose weight. The body stores fat for energy in times of crisis and hunger - great for the old days when a meal might be hard to come by, but not so great in an era of greasy fast food. If you cut your caloric intake too sharply, your body will try to hold onto fat and calories even harder. So always eat a balanced, nutritious diet during any exercise and weight loss program.

Lose Weight by Exercising

When you exercise and build muscle, you actually make your body a more efficient burner of fat by increasing your metabolism rate. When you are in good shape, you burn more calories just sitting around than does someone who is out of shape. While metabolism is partly controlled by genetics, exercise and fitness level also affects metabolism. Muscles are where calories are burned during a workout - the more muscles you have and the harder you work them, the more fat and calories are burned.

How you can burn more calories

The easiest way to burn more calories each day is to throw a little extra exercise into your daily routine. We can't always find an extra hour in the day to get to the gym, but we can walk to lunch rather than drive, we can use stairs rather than the elevator. If you have a two story house, try this - every time you go up or down the stairs, throw in an extra rep and do the stairs twice. Most people go up and down the stairs 6 or 7 times a day - double that and you are climbing a 14 story building each day. Look into getting a treadmill or exercise bike for times when you would otherwise just watch TV, burn some calories at the same time. And change your diet - eat smaller amounts more often. This increases your metabolism more than several heavy meals per day.

Fat Burning Exercise Routines

Try a few of these exercise routines to get a good cardio vascular workout and start burning more fat today. Start with the stair climbing we mentioned above.
Cardio Stair Climb: Stairs work your legs, so throw in some push ups and/or pull-ups in between each flight. Works great at home, but you can use the stairs at your gym as well, or even a hotel.

Ankle/Arm Weights Session: Another easy workout at home is with ankle and wrist weights. Strap on pair, and plan on 15-30 minutes of continuous exercise - lunges, squats, ab crunches, push ups, etc. The extra weight can really get your heart and lungs working.

Swimming: For those who have access to a pool at home or at a gym, swimming is another great source of non-impact cardio exercise. Swimming works out the entire body - legs, arms, chest, abs, glutes. Mix some sprint swims with some normal speed lap swimming.

Jumping Rope: Although old fashioned, the old jump rope will quickly tire you out. If you haven't done it in a while (like since you were a kid) you will be surprised. Splurge on a $10 rope at your local sporting good store, then make some room in the garage or family room - you will be winded and sweating within about 1 minute. Your goal should be speed, which really gets things burning. Jump as fast as you can for 30 seconds (without tripping), then take a 30 second break and repeat. Keep this up for 15-20 minutes, and save yourself a trip to the gym.
