The best dentist site online is called Findadentist.com. Their homepage offers a list of states, choose your state and select a city near you. A list follows with the name and address of each dentist that you can either call or email. They also offer dental plans on the site with nationwide access to 51,000 dentists in their preferred network. One site we recommend staying away from is 1800Dentist. They immediately force you to fill out an online form to get access to a dentist without relinquishing any information. It's too controlling and secretive and that is NOT how you want to start your search for a dentist online. If you have health insurance (47 million people don't), then go to your plans website and see which dentists in your area are in their network. You should be able to get a list of dentists with phone numbers that you can contact. You can also ask around to other families in your neighborhood if they have ever heard of any of the dentists on the list. Word of mouth is the best way to verify Internet sources.
Looking for a Cosmetic Dentist?:
The best cosmetic dentistry site is at Dentalfind.com. It offers information on all cosmetic work you would ever need including porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, dental implants, bonding, bridges, crowns, orthodontics, laser gum surgery, and more. The site is broken down by major cities and you just click on the city to find dentists in your area that perform cosmetic work. In choosing a cosmetic dentist, keep in mind the following: you want to make sure that this person is qualified, experienced, and able to meet your specific needs. Many cosmetic dentists offer free consultations. Take advantage of these offers. Visit a few different cosmetic dentists and compare notes to see which ones you would consider. Again, word of mouth is the ideal way to get information on a cosmetic dentist. More and more websites like Yelp.com are community related sites in specific cities where people are allowed to voice their opinions online about services like house cleaning, doctors, and even cosmetic dentistry. Do a search on Google for "cosmetic dentist reviews" in your city to see what comes up. You may be surprised at how much information is online at readily available for your to review. My wife contacted several references that a cosmetic dentist gave her in regards to a new tooth being implanted into her jaw and they confirmed that his services were reliable and the work done was more than satisfactory.
How to choose a Family Dentist?:
The most common way people find a dentist is by asking a friend or family member which dentist they go to and if that dentist can be trusted to do a good job. After this you must then go to the dentist and ask them if they are accepting any new patients. This is the best way as your friends and family know you best and they will have the best understanding of what you are looking for. Before you commit your entire family to the dentist go in yourself for a simple check up. This way you can ensure that your dentist is a professional who won't traumatize your kids when they go in. A good dentist also means that the entire dental experience is good. Is the staff friendly? Is the waiting room nice? Do you feel relaxed when you are in the chair? All of these variables should fall into line if you are to have the best dental experience possible. I have found that the vast majority of dentists are good at what they do and very comforting to their patients, otherwise they wouldn't be in business anymore. It's not the type of professional which allows you to be "incompetent" and stay in business, especially in small towns where people talk.
How much is dental insurance?:
Dental care is not as much as regular health care and there are discount plans for families available in all areas. Dentalplans.com offers an Aetna dental plan which claims to be the largest discount network with access to 61,000 dental practice locations nationwide. Participants can save 30%-50% on some dental services. It costs $99 for an individual each year or $150/year for a family. When I looked into dental insurance for my family in Oregon through the BlueCross BlueShield plan I have, the dental portion would have been an additional $70/month for the family. When I found out that they don't cover things like fillings or crowns at a very high % I didn't get the insurance. The one thing that annoys me the moist with dentists is that they don't bargain on their rates if you tell them you are not insured. Some doctors and hospitals will negotiate their rates ahead of time if you come to them and discuss your situation. Dentists appear smug enough to not even discuss a rate reduction for the uninsured. I regularly have family dental bills (we are just talking cleaning and x-rays) with 2 kids and my wife included that exceed $500 every 6 months. Even with insurance that wouldn't go down that much. Throw in a few cavities or crowns and you are into the $1000's.
